They shouldn't be paid like employees but they should be getting a full ride with their room/tuition/books/food for all 4 years. If they quit, get cut, or get hurt they should still get their full ride.

Money made of jersey sales and their likeness (video games for example) should go into an escrow count until after they graduate.

I'd like to see athletes paid, but only if they qualify for admission under the same standards that everyone else does. So then you have a choice - You're like every other student, but your job is your sport; or, you're granted special admission. Not both.

I like the escrow account after graduation idea... but I disagree with the full ride being honored if the player quits. If they were injured then that's another story.

I do think the player should be compensated in terms of food, tuition, books, housing...not money. If you quit or dont make the academically eligible, then your benifits end.
The problem is going to be now the additional costs for the school for giving all this free stuff, and again, it will come down to the fact that they will say certain sports dont generate income like others do and therefore, cant do it. You know its going to go there.

Schools in the five major D-1 conferences can afford it. It would just mean sacrificing other things, like an indoor football practice facility, or the addition of 10,000 seats on the stadium. But adding that mandatory cost of business would make it harder for for the have-nots to compete. $1 million is nothing to the University of Texas, but quite a lot at Western Kentucky or Marshall.

For smaller conferences and lower divisions, it might well mean the need to cut sports programs. Might be one of those things where you'd have to try it and see what would happen.

I'll put my vote in for the escrow account - what a great idea.

Back in the early 1960s, the dean of students at Harvard recognized that the students at Harvard were used to being the best overall performers in their class, from elementary school through high school. Once at Harvard, not everyone can be the best - there will be a natural bell curve as some students successfully make the jump to challenging college level material, some stay steady, and some fall behind. The dean recognized the stress that would incur to those in the "bottom quarter." As a solution, the dean suggested admitting athletes that may not be in the top of their class academically, but are otherwise successful individuals. Many of these kids may end up in the "bottom quarter" of their classes at Harvard, but their success on the playing field would mitigate their stress.

An interesting formula which has served at as justification for many top schools to this day. I don't necessarily think that it is right, although it does work for some motivated kids who are on the bubble - it gives them a chance to attend a top school that they otherwise may not have been admitted to. The responsibility should be on the student athlete to decide if they are able and willing to rise to the occasion of the academic challenge.

If the school is profiting from the sport then the athletes should get paid. Fat rich guys shouldn't reap the benefit of other peoples talent.

This topic is mainly for football and basketball, the revenue sports; since many of the kids on scholarship @ the Big D1 schools can't afford to go home or purchase extra meals if hungry becuase they simply can't ask their parents for extra money - it doesn't exist.

For non-revenue sports, this may not occur.
