I was calling the plate on a 12u travel league game last night. I'm floored at the level of disrespect that some of these kids have for others, not to mention themselves, their parents, or the game.
When the pitcher would throw an inside pitch that was a solid 6" off the black and over the chalk, I'd obviously call a ball and instantly, I'd get the mouth wide open gasp and urggghh out of her and the groans from her teams parents etc... To add insult to injury this team was up by approx 15 runs and still was stealing every base poss and taunting the other team on nearly every play. Baserunners were literally doing the twerk dance while off the base (pitcher wasn't in the circle). I was totally embarrassed for these classless idiots. Parents were encouraging this behavior. I did put a stop to the nonsense, but by me doing that only added fuel to the non strike call fire. What kind of adults are we raising our kids to be with that kind of parenting or coaching....
As a coach, I teach aspects of the game of course, however I also use this game to teach values that will produce strong confident ladies who aspire to be leaders in life and not just idiots with some trophies.

There are teams, players, fans, parents who have class, manners, and maturity. Then there are those who have none of these. I think of them as............ Well I won't say it here.

I like to remind myself that the losers that you describe above are, I believe, the exceptions. Most teams, most of the time, are very reasonable. However, I do see disrespectful kids from time-to-time and all I have to do is to look over to their parents to see where they get it from.

I've seen a lot of this recently as well in Colorado and in Irvine. "Name" organizations too. Also very prevalent during HS playoffs, where the absolute worst adult fans/parents were from so-called "faith based" schools.

You are likely new to umpiring if this sort of stuff surprises you.

Umpires need to be fairly thick skinned. It gets much worse than this.

Im fairly new to calling the plate, (just recently got my patch) I usually called a base or if I did get the plate, I worked lower level games or rec leagues. I've seen a lot unsportsman like stuff over the years both in coaching as well as umpiring, but last night was out of controll. The parents were leading the charge. Those poor kids will most likely grow up to be just like mom and dad if not worse!

Poor sportsmanship normally leads to Karma.
Back when my DD played 12U, she gave up 2 runs in the
1st inning against a team of taunters whose parents
acted like they had just won the 7th game of the World Series.
DD didn't allow another base runner in a 11-2 win.
The other team did not come out of the dugout for handshake
after the game either.

12U is the most difficult age to coach and deal with crazy mommies

I'd get the mouth wide open gasp and urggghh out of her

Thats when you call time, step around, sweep off the plate and quietly tell the catcher she needs to go have a talk with her pitcher.

Why would you be shocked at this behavior? Many kids are brought up that nothing is their fault and that they are perfect/great from parents that were taught the same mind set.
Im surprised when I see the opposite anymore.
