Default Faking run from3rd to home

One of the other posts reminded me of a play we used ALOT, to try and distract the catcher about to throw down to 1st

Runner on third. Batter lays down a bunt. Catcher goes after ball. Runner on 3rd has not moved off the bag. An instant before the catcher touches the ball, 3BR yells 'RUNNER" or "GOING" as he/she sprints for 2 steps and stops.

MOST of the time the catcher will at least hesitate making the throw to first, giving the batter/runner another second to make it there safely.

If the catcher turns toward third, you have to dive back but your batter/runner will be safe.

At BEST, the catcher hesitates, makes a hurried throw to first (or third) and 3br score, Batter / runner may or may not make it to 2nd.

Dont recall anyone talking about this. Does anyone else do this or were we the only ones?

You must be the guy that taught ARod to yell "I got it" to opposing infielders while he was running the bases on a pop-up. I would consider it poor sportsmanship and not something to be taught or encouraged in youth sports.

And I suppose a delayed steal would be bush league then right?

A batter showing a bunt then swinging away would be unsportsmnn-like conduct??

A pitcher throwing a slow change up should be an illegal pitch??

A batter pointing to the center field fence and then bunting would be illegal??

What's the difference? I am just pointing out a tactic that I dont recall anyone talking about.

I wonder if any of the teams you play against has read this post and replies??? HHHMMMM.

A delayed steal relies strictly on the speed and skill of the runner attempting it, and has nothing to do with distracting or otherwise interfering with the other team. I have a new title for your book:

I would never EVER teach my girls to do such an unsportsman-like thing. It is Bush League at it's finest and will anger the opposing coach, team and parents. I liken this play to a fake tag (which is illegal as well as being unsportsman-like)

A delayed steal, on the other hand, is a well timed play (with no shenanigans) that if executed well will gain a baserunner a base.

It is done in hopes of causing the other team to make a mental or hurried physical mistake that YOU then capitalize on.

If you do a delayed steal from 1st to 2nd with a runner also on 3rd, what do you hope will happen?

My book is in its 2nd edition. The first one was called 'Smartsoftball'. The winningest teams use tactics like this all the time.

I am not saying they are or are not ethical. However, these things are done and used is softball. All I can do is make unaware coaches aware these things do happen. That way, when the other team uses them against your team, you wont come back at me and say I didnt tell you about them.

What defenses have you come up with when they are used against you??

Players NEVER yell anything to a player on the other team. The 3rd base runner was yelling it to her base coach.

tells me that you have used this type of tactic. Is that how you let other coaches that this type of thing happens? By doing it to them?
