Florida if the school goes from 6th-12th grade. Doesn't effect your eligibility for 9th-12th grades.

The put in rules that you can only play one year per school grade (i.e. you can't repeat 8th grade and play a second time for the HS as an 8th grader - and yes the rule is in because some people tried to do exactly that).

In Florida it is usually the private schools that are 6 - 12. They take their softball very seriously. A year or so back a local private school was coached by Olympian Dot Richardson and they recruited internationally. Full scholarships with room and board included. Also in Florida if you are home schooled you can play HS ball at the public school for which you are zoned, or any private school in the state. And of course if you are a student in a private school you can change schools each year, playing for the best teams providing the best offers in terms of "tuition assistance".

In your face
TN an 8th grader can play as long as he/she is enrolled in that school. Meaning a district would have to use the old type of classification. Elementary K-7th, high school 8th-12th. Some private schools are K-12th. The 8 semester rule doesn't kick in until their 9th grade year.

What states allow 7th and 8th Graders to play on HS team? In Illinois, they can't. I believe in Kentucky they can. Others?
KY allows 7th and 8th graders as evidenced by Montana Fouts - One pitch at a time

CA does not and limits playing to 8 consecutive semesters. I recall a couple of boys repeating 8th grade strictly for athletics.

Pa. 9th thru 12th grade only. N.Y. Must allow it because a guy at work was mad because some 7th graders are on the varsity team.

Ohio allows it but it is 4years total so if they started in 8th grade, they could only play through their Junior year.
Hmm, everything I've seen says they can't in OH with an exception for 15yo's.

1-1-2 Students enrolled below the seventh grade are ineligible for participation in interscholastic athletics. Students enrolled in grades 7 or 8 are ineligible for interscholastic competition on the same squad with students in grade 9 or higher.
Exception: A student who attains the age of 15 prior to August 1 is eligible for interscholastic athletics only at the high school level not to exceed eight semesters.
