Because too many parents want their kid to be the star. And if she's not willing to work for it and earn it, you just start your own team.

so Ken, you would say too many teams? I mean hey, I am a 14U HC with over 10 years experience and I don't have a daughter and I cant get girls to play for me so maybe you are right about the star thing

In the older age groups, I see established teams that have been together for a few years fold when they lose some key players to other teams or other sports. HS kids drop out of softball for any number of reasons, and the number of teams tend to eliminate themselves when they can't fill their roster or can't compete.

In younger age groups, there are a lot of teams, but I also think too many coaches are not willing to take a marginal player, coach them, and give them a chance. IMO these younger teams looking for players at this point in the year want to get better through recruiting, rather than teaching.

Ken is being too cynical for a change, IMO.

There are lots of reasons you see teams looking for players. Most of them are good reasons.

Firstly, the fall is the time of year when many teams are building and rebuilding. You just finished your season, and 3-4 aren't coming back, some might be aging up, so you're trying to replace.

It's just the way it works, and it's a good thing to have a lot of coaches trying to build teams. Competition makes them better, and only the best survive.

Let's use the example of my daughter's former team. They folded this week. My daughter had moved to another team, but the old team still had 6 or 7 solid players. They had played together, liked the coach, and it was a convenient team in terms of location/travel. I don't blame them for holding out. There might be 5-6 teams like that in our metro area, all holding out, wanting to be their own team, and for good reasons. Some will make it, some won't. Free market economy. It's chaotic, but it works.

Both!

Too many teams looking for their specific brand of player.....

Just think about it. Each team needs to match their “brand” with these player variables:

Level of age
Level of skill
Level of competitiveness
Level of family funds
Level of goals/ambitions
Level of player & family “jerk” factor
Level of player & family allowable dedication of time

Then they gotta keep a team of teenage girls from imploding on each other.

Holy crud this system has allot of moving parts when ya look at it this way!

Too many daddy-ball teams and not enough paid coaches.

Maybe, but there doesn't seem to be a big difference in how many teams with a paid coach are looking for players vs. teams with a daddy for a coach(es). Nor does it seem to affect whether the team implodes or not. Generally around here the daddyball club teams are still associated with larger organizations.

I think Ken is right, too many kids (or more likely parents) think they need to be the #1 pitcher, catcher or SS. We have two strong pitchers (my dd is one of them), and I was hoping to add a third. My dd was willing to give up innings to further improve our team. We couldn't get our top pitching recruit because they wanted more than 33% of the innings. Maybe not unreasonable, but she is now the pitching star of an inferior team vs. being on a team where she would be one of three talented pitchers and many talented players.

Too many daddy-ball teams and not enough paid coaches.

ha, ha, ha ... that's what we need is to spend more money for a game that has been played for over 100 years (at least baseball). Paid coaches ... expensive showcases ... big org's ... cross country travel ... expensive new premier league ... are turning this wonderful game into a business.

When the only real revenue comes from star struck youngsters parents. There is very little income coming to softball from the outside world. 99.5% of the income comes directly from the participants. Sure, just pay more.
