I have never thought of it but I'd have to say that in TB, she was correctly rated. Typically hit 3, 4 or 5 but mostly 4 in TB. Played every position but 3rd and catch and loved doing so. She knew in HS ball that she was going to play but thought that TB enabled her to be on the field no matter what since she knew how to play so many positions. As an OF in HS under rated. She doesn't have a lot of speed but then again, she had 11 assist as a sophomore. Yes, I said that right -- 11 assists. Don't run on her.

I always thought that she was a very good pitcher and was always the top pitcher for TB. However, in HS she only seemed to pitch the toughest games and mostly where one might think for out of conference we didn't have a chance to win. We won. Still, she would get 11 or 12 starts in HS and that was it. Once she hadn't pitched in a week and we were going to play the #4 ranked team in the state. It was also her birthday and she wasn't told she was pitching until game time. We won. She didn't pitch again until the conference championship a week and a half later. Her HS record was 29-1 and threw a perfect game and a no hitter. I know I must be "that parent" because few colleges wanted her to pitch. The only school to use a radar gun on her had her 63 consistently. While not great, she was 16 then. She did not pitch her senior year because she was not getting recruited to pitch and it seemed as if she was not needed in the circle.

I have 2 DD's the oldest one is what I would say evenly rated for her travel ball club but underrated in high school at least for awards and the like but for her playing if she had a broken leg the coach would still want her to play so not sure how I would rate that .....

My younger DD is the pitcher of the family and plays middle infield shes small for her size so shes always underrated but the funny thing is if you compare stats from the other pitchers on the teams over the years shes right with them in era hits opp ba etc.....funny story along these lines this last weekend we play in the big memorial day tourney around here and I notice we play my DD's old team on sun. night(coach didn't want her this year because(in his words) shes just not fast enough) so she gets the call and she throws a 3 hitter against them ...we still lose 4-1 (to many errors)but she made her statement..... when they're shaking hands at the end of the game shes getting ready to shake coaches hand and he told her shes still not fast enough lol what a loser...

Wow, that's pretty weak from the coach. ...

There was a girl last year that tried out for me. I asked her back to see her a second time (they lived 1.5 hours away), but I still passed and felt bad for making them drive that far twice. Months later, she shows up on the team that is our arch-rival (friendly, but still arch). She played shortstop, went 3-for-3, all line drives. I was feeling sick to my stomach because I knew she was a very good athlete, but just didn't see enough in tryouts to think she could hit. (The girl that I took instead was hitting .150 at that point). But after the game, I start thinking that I really like the .150 hitter personally, even if she can't hit, and I'm also pretty happy for the 3-for-3 girl. She showed us up, and good for her. The joke was on me, and I told her and her family as much after the game. It actually makes for a good story. It helped that we won that game by 1 run. :)

I don't think rating a child at 10, 11, or even 12 is the correct thing to do. Rating children and players can often lead to coaches and parents underestimating players who have not fully developed. Read: What Makes a Softball Player: Talent vs. Hard Work! | Building a Better Athlete

Just an FYI, I don't believe the OP was talking about rating a kid for lifetime.

It was more an observation of how your current daughters coach rates her right now.

Really, beyond T-ball, 8u etc...coaches have to make a lineup, who plays where, who bats where, who pitches when etc....that itself is a form of rating. That changes a lot over time but the Q was at this given moment (or pick your time period) do you believe your daughter is over/under rated by the coaches.

Not sure on this. I will see where she is in the lineup next weekend. She was #1 on her league team. She didn't strike out once looking this season. She did strike out more than a lot of other players but also was one of the better hitters. Can't hit if you don't swing. None of her swings were timid. She's made vast improvements from last year.

I remember DD striking out swinging once this season, and it was a big ol' whiff! That's the only strikeout I can recall, but then again, perhaps I don't want to remember. For better or worse, she almost always puts the ball in play. Like NVfishing says, "Can't hit if you don't swing."

I love it when you can hear opposing coaches make dumb defensive calls to the defense. A couple of tournaments the opposing coach yells to his defense "she's a pull hitter" and shifts his outfield to the left. My RH dd gets up and laces a triple to right. The main thing my dd does well is use the entire field.

As far as underrated or overrated it doesnt really matter. She is a high average hitter with a good obp but lacks consistent power. I guess most people tend to underate her hitting because they dont see her hit the ball deep much. People tend to only remember the extra base hits instead of the fact that a hitter goes 2-3 with a bb and 3 runs scored.
