Face masks/ball coming off the bat statistics

I was hoping to find some info in the other face mask thread. My daughter is doing a paper for school on the use of face masks.

I'm hoping that some of you can help us out. We need to find some kind of statistics on how fast a ball comes off a bat and injury statistics. It can't be people's opinions, it has to be facts from studies.

Anyone have any ideas where we might dig up some info on this subject?

Statistics ( broad but could be used as the "introduction" )

National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), is probably a good place to go. You'll have to spend some time in that system to find what you're looking for.

If you pitch the ball down the middle of the plate then its more than likely come straight back at you!

Lots of college coaches measure the ball speed off a tee and keep a chart to guage the progress of their players. Your DD might want to send an email to several coaches and see if they will share the actual data. It's a long shot, but it couldn't hurt to try.

Here's a site that has some measurements for ball exit speed off a tee: The Center For Sports Skill Measurement and Improvement

These will be slower than exit speeds coming off from a pitched ball, but it might give you a starting point.

Even in college baseball this could never happen. Its not really a matter of safety but a matter of money. There is a whole industry that relies on overcharging for bats.
