    Default Look Back Situation

I saw this in a 10U ASA State Tournament game. This is in elimination play, but not an elimination game. Actually it was the game between the two undefeated teams left. So the winner will automatically go on to the championship game.

    Late innings

Defensive team up by 1 run

    Runner at 3rd

    Two outs

    1 Strike on the batter

Next pitch comes in, batter swings and misses.

Ball goes back to the pitcher.

The offensive team thinks that's strike 3.

Batter starts walking off the field.

Runner from 3rd comes off the base.

They realize it's not 3 outs.

    Everyone turns around.

Runner that was on 3rd , but got off the bag, returns back to 3rd.

The entire time, the pitcher is just standing in the circle with the ball because the whole defense knew it wasn't 3 outs yet, so they didn't move.

Defensive coach asks the umpire for look back call, even goes out there and discusses it with them. They don't make any call. Just continued the game.

    Stacie:

From my experience (not agreeing or disagreeing), umpires seem to give slack to the young players especially when a question arises out of confusion and not intent. It was an ASA State Tournament, and one would think the noose would be tighter. Those obscure rules are tough to teach in a practice, especially to ten year olds.
