Love it.... I hope it eventually becomes mandatory just like a batting helmet.

I personally don't like the idea of mandating masks or heart guards (particularly for adults/college players), but I sure wish more would wear the masks when playing positions 1, 3 & 5...

It won't, and shouldn't, become mandatory, but it will become more accepted. Right now the girls entering college are the same girls who started wearing the Gameface back at 12U. We are going to see it more and more, just like we did in all other sports/positions.

I believe that it will become mandatory, just like batting helmets did.

I am glad to see more college players wearing the face guard on their batting helmets, too. That became mandatory in HS, when my DD was still playing.

ASA and softball is slow to accept change.

They are experimenting with a different college ball.

Testing and approving the masks is a long process. The batting helmets were already tested, so easier to add face guard and test those.

The balls have been tested in fall competition.

Wrong. If you read the memo, it said it would take effect in January of 2001.

"The NCAA Softball Rules Committee, during a recent conference call, made a rules recommendation to the respective divisional governing bodies regarding the compression of balls used in college softball.

If the recommendation passes, the following would take effect January of 2001. 1. In Rule 3-1, a compression limitation will be added to the current ball specifications to read: 350 pounds plus or minus 50 pounds. In addressing the balance between offense and defense, the NCAA Softball Rules Committee is concerned about ball exit speed and the role of technology in the game. "

I wear a lacrosse pro cascade Helmet for slowpitch pitching. I dont fault anyone for safety if it makes you more confident, thus a better player at your position. I get balls hit back at me 80-100+mph from some big guys...the helmet makes me more confident and lets me stand in there and take it. I would rather gear up, than see more changes to the balls and bats.
I do like to see younger people wearing safety precautions. It only takes one bad shot.

Why? My pet peeve is parents and coaches constantly whining about this should be made mandatory or that should be required when the parents and coaches have the ultimate responsibility and authority in protecting the players.

No, right. The NCAA is looking at the same ball ASA has authorized for SP play for the past couple of years and is mandating it next year, the 52/300
