Got a 99? Call her Nines.

Got a 27? Call her Two Seven.

Got a 75? Don't call her Seven Five. Sounds lame.

A mom from DD's 8u all star team 5 years ago still calls her 'Scoop' because she played 1B on that team. Didn't play an inning of 1B the last 3 years, now plays some first.

They just gotta sound good. I tend to like 1 syllable nicknames, but not always. I coached basketball 4 years ago. Maggie with always be Mags. Tatiyana with always be T.

Also, don't call the big overweight 1B Tank. Mom won't like that.

I've had:

"Flash" - A wicked-fast slapper/base stealer
"Bub" - A stout catcher
"T-Ball" - A very small outfielder
"Slinky" - Incredibly flexible 1B
"L-Train" - Big-time power hitter
"Lucy" - A Ginger
"Mad Dog" - A fearless 3B
"Cosmo" - A tall, thin, rather beautiful SS
"Pork Chop" - A Vegan 2B
"Prima D" - A very good pitcher who came to us from one of our fiercest rivals
"Mama Doe" - An extremely mature 12-year-old SS
"LuLu" - A 14-year-old CF who always wore yoga pants
"Smitty" - A LF with the last name of Jones

All the names were given by the girls on the team. There have been many more through the years, these are just some that I remember well.

I had a girl I called "Beast". She was a smaller girl who played bigger.

When you're trying to force a nickname it usually sounds phony. I never set out to give them one. It' usually something that jumps into my mind and I blurt it out.

Had a "Pig Pen" one time at 10U. We were playing a game and the temps were 100+. Field was SUPER dusty. She was playing 2nd. Ball hit hard in the 3-4 hole. Thought it was a hit. The next thing I knew the ground erupted in a big cloud of dust. Out of the cloud came the ball to 1st base for the last out of the inning. When she got to the dugout she was covered from head to toe in dirt and dust that was sticking to her because she was sweating from the heat. She looked like Pig Pen from Charlie Brown. It took us almost our entire half inning to get her cleaned up. Everyone had a good laugh over it. We never used it at games or anything like that. It was just an inside thing within the confines of the immediate team. To this day, even when she is in college I can call her Pig Pen and she'll smile and give me a hug.

When DD was 12 playing on 14U with a bunch of 9th graders she used to get hit a lot at and behind the plate. One game she was hit 3 times by the same pitcher. While showing her purple badges someone called her Boo boo and it stuck. 5 years later when she runs into parents they still call her Boo boo. I just call her Boo now.

We had a girl that loved to eat dill pickles and soon called her "Pickles".

Well, I think that nicknames, just come (and sometimes the girls have one) but I had players called Slider, Rookie, and Cheesy.

I like the idea but the girls have to earn the nickname to really make it stick. I think you should let the names develop as the season progresses.
