Default Christmas - do coaches (the ones who give lessons) get gifts?

Just wondering if it's normal protocol to bring a gift to the coaches that we pay for lessons...DD has her last lesson of season this Wednesday, and I found out his truck was broken into last week where $7K worth of equipment was stolen (?!?!?!?!). The problem I have is I won't have extra $$ until Friday, and her lesson is on Wednesday...so...I'd thought I'd ask if it's the proper thing to do...

I'd say there would be no harm in it. We give gifts to our mailman, garbage guys, meter readers, etc. Just something small goes a long way and people appreciate you "recognizing" their efforts.

Since, you don't have extra money, I might take him a new softball and express my regrets about the truck. I haven't been given gifts, so I don't know how usual it is.

My pool guy, just handed me a Christmas card. I don't mind tipping him, since he lends a hand when I need something moved that is heavy.

Last year, I got a gift card for a local frozen custer place. It was symbolic since it was not for much but the young man picked the gift and spent his own money. He came to my door and delivered it. I don't give many lesson anymore and I don't charge. Last year, I had 4 pretty much full time kids and two kids came for special lessons. For me, it is fun and keeps me in the game. Also, since I don't charge, sometimes I get a dad to throw me some front toss so I can keep on swinging. I love to hit and it makes it worth it.

Like Amy menitoned, it doesn't have to be much and will be appreciated.

I've received all sorts of gifts before. Sometimes it's a plate of homemade cookies (half of which never make it back to my house, by the way). I've received gift cards to restaurants, cash, a gift basket, even a book or two. One year I received a school hat and t-shirt from a pitcher I'd helped land at a college. Nothing is required or expected, but it is always appreciated when someone takes a little time to say "thanks." In this case, it really is the thought that counts.

My DD and DW will usually make some sort of treat for her PC. She has been with him for almost 6 yrs now and they have a very good relationship.

As with others who teach my DD and get underpaid for it, we usually bring something homemade or a coffee gift certificate this time of year.
