A lefty throwing to third is faster than a right hander in a perfect world with a inside pitch to a RB. Right handed pitchers natural tendency is to throw outside to a right handed batter forcing a lefty to pull the ball across their body to transfer. That costs time. I played baseball and caught for a very long time. The biggest issue is plays at home. Especially with right handed outfielders because of ball fade

Not so much with fastpitch due to heavier ball and shorter throws

If that's the case with your pitchers you better get them a lot of work. They have to be able to throw in the ball up/dn and in/out with confidence.

Now I could be thinking baseball reasons too much here (and maybe there's something different about softball I'm not considering), but this strikes me as wrong.

1) Stealing third base is a lot easier, especially with a right-handed hitter.

2) Making tag plays at home plate requires either a difficult backhand play or diving across the path of the runner after receiving the ball.

A lefty catcher would have a very slight advantage fielding a bunt, but I can't really think of any other advantage. It doesn't mean no lefties should ever try it, but it's certainly an uphill battle.

My lefty catcher dd scoffs at your ill-gotten assertions.

What do you want to bet that if you'd have reverse imaged her skills video to make her appear righthanded that she'd have gotten more interest?! Just imagine the surprise when they'd first see her in person!

Lol! I never gave reverse imaging a thought.

Actually my DD would give up C if they could find a way to allow a Lefty to play 3rd base.

When my dd was a sophomore in HS the starting 3B had a concussion and was out for a week. My dd came out from behind the plate and played 3 games at 3B and did a great job. She threw out bunters, slappers, etc. like it was her natural position. The other catcher was ecstatic because it gave her a chance to play. She was a lefty catcher too.....lol.

We had a LH catcher for two seasons of HS ball, but she was also fast and a great outfielder, so that is where she is playing in college. She starts in CF, but I think she is still listed as their 3rd string catcher.

Imagine my surprise when we get to my DD's first JV game last season and she is announced as the starting SS. Being a lefty catcher is one thing but starting at SS was a shock. Honestly being a lefty really didn't hurt her at short. He biggest problem was learning not to drop her leg down to block the bag. It doesn't hurt bad with gear on but spikes to a bare leg can be rough.
