I think you'll see just the opposite when she plays in tournament ball. It will be a treat to catch pitches where you call them, etc.

Sorry I should have been more clear. The other teams pitcher was decent, it was the pitcher that my daughter was catching that was all over the place. I'm just worried that she will get frustrated that all the t-drills, time working on her secondary position and throws to second are wasted because she spends her time scrambling to get ball at the backstop.

Classof2020 I was thinking the same thing...SMS90 is asking about the value of catching a poor pitcher. As the Dad of twins, also graduating in 2020 who happen to be a catcher/pitcher combo we've seen plenty of this. Some days the catcher gets more of a workout than others. The upside is all that practice blocking, scrambling and hustling to still make a play after a wild pitch is going to pay dividends for your DD down the road. She needs to be solid back there no matter how bad of an outing/practice session the pitcher is having. And of course the opposite is true as well, your pitcher might be throwing lights out, painting the frame and confusing the heck out of the batter but if your catcher isn't up to the task to receive those pitches and everything ends up as a passed ball the pitcher can lose her rhythm and get pretty discouraged.

One of the pitchers most responsible for DD's development could throw the ball through a barn door, that is if she could hit it. The best part was that the wildness was completely random so you never knew where the next pitch might be - hi, low, in, out. Pitchers dad couldn't understand why she didn't pitch varsity.

SMS90 - Hopefully, you can get your DD to see this as an opportunity to see how good she can be in challenging conditions. There are lots of things to be learned, and lots of skills than can be practiced - including staying positive, and helping her pitcher stay focused.

A catcher working with an inaccurate pitcher has to keep a wide stance with her toes pointed at 1st and 3rd. Keep the quads engaged by not resting on her heels or knee savers. Be mobile without being a distraction to the blue.

Any advice that I can pass on to DD on dealing with really bad pitching?
There are times when a team's best catcher doesn't get to catch for the team's best pitcher. While it may be easier to catch a good pitcher, catching the Lesser pitcher still has an important role, possibly a more important role!
#1 stepping up to Greater challenge!

For catchers~
Bad pitching is GREAT TRAINING!
Bad pitching helps illustrate great defensive skills behind the plate!
Bad pitching often creates more base runners for the catcher to control throwing Runners out!
A catcher with good framing can help pitchers have better results.
A catcher who is supportive and good at communicating can help with part of the mental game.
Catchers are defensive players behind the plate. Have a much greater role than just receiving pitches!
