hello,
I'm looking for a new catcher's helmet for my 12 year old DD. Right now i'm leaning towards the Easton Mako, it looks like that helmet
has holes right above the eyes to see popups better. Any suggestions. Price is not important, She does fit into women's sizes as well.
Thanks

We have used all of the above. The Wilson Shock FX2.0 had some durability issues. Especially if your daughter is one that throws off her helmet. The face mask is mounted on the side using springs and that is where it broke. The All Star System 7 is a really good helmet and she currently uses it as her backup. She loves the Schutt Air Maxx because of the padding on the inside. It looks more like the padding of a football helmet and she says the padding is much cooler than the traditional foam. That being said......The Schutt is the heaviest of the three helmets.

We went to a shop that had a ton of catchers gear and a lot of helmets and tried all star, Wilson, etc but she went with an Easton I think M10. Doesn't look like they make it anymore but similar to the new ones. It has held up well and she loves it. It was all about fit though. Many nice helmets just didn't fit right. She went with an all matte black catcher gear look which also looks cool.

I came across this online I don't know about the sizing or weight and geared towards umpires These are on the expensive side but probably worth it if concussions are a issue Plate Gear – Force3 Pro Gear
Defender Hockey Style Mask – Force3 Pro Gear

How heavy is this catcher's helmet compared to others? Are all catchers helmets NOCSAE approved? My DD has used Easton in the past and looking to upgrade her catchers gear in the near future. Was thinking about the Wilson Shock helmet but still looking at manufacturers... Never heard of this company before thanks for sharing will check them out.

This is very similar to the Wilson FX Shock 2.0 which is a step above everyone else IMO. Weight wise, they are middle of the road. Some are heaver and some others are lighter. Any top manufacturer name that is selling Catching Gear are all NOCSAE stamped. Depending on the manufacturer you will find the stamp usually molded into the shell in various locations. Easton makes decent gear and it's extremely comfortable. The issue I have found from DD's past use has been longevity; even the Mako series. None of their gear will hold up to the extreme year round conditions that my DD puts it through. If we got 6 months out of leg guards I felt lucky. The helmet we got close to a year out of before the padding started to fall out and/or disintegrate.

Eric F. has it right.

My dd used Wilson ProMotion gear and the Shock FX 2.0 helmet for 3 HS seasons and 3 TB seasons plus a fall session of college....approximately 300 caught games plus gobs of practices and clinics. The legs were replaced after the 2nd season due to a crack in the shin protector near a rivet. The middle forehead pad had to be re-glued during the 3rd TB season. The gear was used on the field, in the gym, and even on the parking lot a few times during HS ball. My dd put the ProMotion gear through the wringer. It is her favorite gear she's ever owned and I couldn't be happier with the performance and longevity.
