Just behind home plate
I'm not sure if I'm posting to the right board but I'll have at it...

We had a game Wednesday afternoon. We were in the 7th inning up 6-2. We had a freshman pitcher from the JV team pitching for us. She had been getting hit pretty hard during the inning. With one out and the bases loaded, she threw to their hitter. She hit the ball to right center field that was caught up to by our right fielder. She fires it back in toward the plate after two runs had scored. The runner in question, rounded third as the ball came in. I caught it and blocked the plate. The runner hits me square in the chest but I managed to hold on to the ball even with the collision. The ump sees I have the ball and she calls the runner out. I get up and in a show of good sportsmanship, walked over to help the runner up. I seen she was still down and clutching at her shoulder. I took my mask off and sat it beside me trying to talk to her. Her coach and trainer came over to do what they do. The coach tried to say her injury was my fault along with some other parents. I feel bad for what happened to her but injuries happen. Is what I did right or shouldn't have I gotten involved?

All sounds good to me.

As soon as an adult, ump or coach, comes over move away.

DD has hurt players pitching, if you are lucky you might get a handshake. Never does the word sorry come out of her mouth.

You made a great play. Nice job! Emotions always run high in those situations. Don't let the parents or coaches get to you. They shouldn't be addressing players anyway.

Back on the dirt...
I think a lot of folks don't understand the rules on catchers blocking the plate when they have the ball. I've seen more than once parents get upset because a catcher was blocking the plate. It's okay as long as you have the ball.

Sounds like a great play and good sportsmanship to boot!

So Cal
Your concern and actions were classy and in very good sportsmanship. From your description, you made a good play. As you said, injuries happen.

It's determined by umpire's discretion. He or she has to determine the legality of the play. Based on the fact that the umpire called the runner out makes me believe the play was legal. Without video evidence no one here can make an informed decision, and even video might not give difinitive proof.

Sounds like a good play to me. Did the runner slide or stay upright after you had the ball? Not sure about high school, but in ASA the runner needs to avoid a crash if the defender has the ball.

She was upright when she was coming in. I think maybe she was going to try to slide but I can't say definitely that's what she was trying to do.

If I recall from your previous posts, you're pretty small. She may have come in high thinking she could blow through a small catcher and knock the ball out. I'm guessing her team will think twice about trying that again.

Ignore everyone but your self, your parents, then coach.

Adults have yelled at DD threw another adult more times then I can count.
