My daughter doesn't like them at all. She used them for a week and took them off, saying they made her feel like she was perching and actually hurt her legs. That was almost three years ago now and she was 7. After discussing it with both her catching instructors, they feel she doesn't need them and have both gone as far as to say they make lazy catchers.

Some girls look super comfortable wearing them, others look very shaky on them, most have them on wrong but I have found that no one likes hearing that lol. So what are the pros and cons of them? Do they really make a difference? Are there studies showing they are good or bad?

I'm not sure the knee savers actually make a catcher lazy. I think a lazy catcher uses them as a crutch. I don't particularly care for them and most active and athletic catchers that Ive seen don't even bother using them.

Here's how I look at it:

1. If the catcher does not like the way the knee savers feel, then don't use them.
2. If the catcher needs the knee savers because their knees hurt when they catch without them, then don't catch.
3. If the catcher likes the way the knee savers feel, then use them.
4. If the knee savers produce a lazy catcher, then find another catcher.

That about sums it up..

Just a word of caution.....Knee savers that are not installed correctly can actually do damage to the joint. They are meant to be worn on the bottom two straps of the shin guard, but I constantly see them installed higher which acts as a wedge behind the knee. This is not good.

I love an athletic catcher. Take an athlete and tie pillows to the backs of their legs and see how athletic they are.
