An extreme example, but no less comical than most attempts to pull the ball back into the zone.

Agreed. One catcher on my DD's team tries to frame EVERYTHING. I'm trying to get her to understand that it's okay for balls to be balls, and it's actually hurting her ability to sell pitches on the edges.

I hate when it works...

Earlier this year I was coaching 1B when an opposing catcher was pulling balls into the zone from up to a foot outside... and blue was calling them strikes. I turned to the BU and said "You need to have a word to him about being fooled by pulling pitches in, because if you don't, I will, and we all know where that goes"

Technically framing/glove position should not work - as an umpire you are meant to make the call as the ball pass through the zone and where it is caught is meant to have zero effect on your call. In reality only the very, very, very good umpires do this well. That is why we teach all our catchers the NECC way of doing it.
