Who do you think are the catchers that we can point to as models for our own FP catchers? Open to any and all i.e., NCAA SB, MLB, your DD/DS, current, retired, rising, etc. Pix and video support welcome. IMO, unfortunately there are many elite-level catchers that are getting by with poor or mediocre technique because of their athleticism - this is particularly true in the FP game.

I lost count of how many times Salvador Perez of the KC Royals was referred to as an All-Star catcher in tonight's WS game. He's got a really quick release and a cannon for an arm, but....his blocking and receiving could be better IMO.

Although I don't get to see him much as I'm an AL fan, the Brewer's Lucroy is at or very near the top of my list for receiving, blocking, and throwing.

Russell Martin of the Pirates(for now) is solid behind the plate, receives the ball with the best of them, blocks well, knows his pitchers and the hitters and has a good arm.

I think your comment about being athletic is true about all catchers. In my opinion the catcher needs to be the most athletic person on the field.

Buster Posey is very solid receiving, knows his horses, blocks and throws well.

Russell Martin caught my eye in the All-Star game a few years back when he kept his team in it on individual effort several times.

Since this is a softball board, Megan Willis TX, Shannon Bustillos MD, Alexa Peterson, OR, and the catcher who caught for Waldrop and those Florida State pitchers, sorry can't remember her name but those pitchers have some variety and she had to catch them.

I like the Ga. catcher....Wilson???? I'm guessing she is going to be even better this year.

IMO, Molina used to be better. He's still a great catcher, but a few of his mistakes here and there may be an indicator that his recent injuries are starting to take their toll.

Its hard to say this as a Dodgers fan...I enjoy watching Posey play. He's good and getting better.

KC's Perez does a few things that I wouldn't teach. He's a good athlete, but I don't care for some of his techniques.

Admittedly, my observation of top level D1 play is limited to the WCWS, but there really haven't been any catchers that I've seen that I would want to use as an example for a young catcher to model their defense after. Blocking is the biggest culprit, followed by receiving.
