Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this helmet? The other catcher on DDs team took a hard foul ball to the mask last weekend and ended up with a concussion. After seeing that, I am thinking something like this for DDs next set of gear. Is there anything else comparable?

My daughters both use the Shock FX helmets and love them. Only issue is that the padding tends to come off of the "tailpiece" on the back of the helmet (plastic flap that extends down beyond the back plate). I have had this happen on two separate helmets and Wilson has replaced them both under warranty.

Otherwise, they are comfortable, highly adjustable, and the chin and head pads absorb sweat very well. No idea if there's anything to the "shock absorber" theory, but they definitely do compress on impact and they look pretty cool.

Exact same thing here. That far back pad at the bottom is permanently gone (happened 2X). I get a request from DD about every 3 months to re-glue some of the other pads which are all (always) there.

Beyond that I'd recommend this helmet as it also offers good vision. It's a very popular helmet for good reason.

Just curious, how old are your DD's that are using this helmet. At first inspection, they seem a bit heavier than some of the others. My DD is 10 and I was a bit hesitant to purchase one. On the other hand, the safety aspect is quite appealing and worth that extra perceived weight.

Thanks!

Has used it from 12's to 16's. I don't think weight, once she's worn it for a while, will be an issue.

This is what my dd uses. She's 18u and she loves it. She also has and loves the ProMotion gear. She's taken many shots off the grill with no problems. Also, the weight is fine....it's not heavy. My dd says the shock absorbers really dampen the blow.

We used early versions of the Shock mask and it is very well made. Several of my students use them and like them. The 4 "shock absorber" mounts are actually spring loaded bumpers. The mask pivots into the 4 bumper slots via the rubber mount on the top front of the mask. We have see them break, but they still offer more impact absorbency than a standard mask. Another factor that can increase the risk of concussion is how tight the mask fits on your catchers head. If it's too tight, the foam padding is compressed and will not absorb impact. the compressed foam will transmit the impact to your catcher's head. (Loose fitting masks are also hazardous) If your catcher takes off their mask (Not while the ball is in play please) and has divots in her/his head from the padding, the mask is too tight.

SHOCK FX

That helmet is a bit more expensive and probably better than the one my dd used for 4 years, but she absolutely loved hers. And had no problems with any of the padding coming loose. Here is the one she used. Wilson Silver Shock FX Catchers Helmets
DD said that ricochets off the mask still had a good thump but didn't hurt. Surprisingly she said the biggest difference was the noise difference. She said with her old helmet (also a wilson but no shock absorbers) a hit to the mask was almost deafening but with the shock mask the noise was not nearly as loud. Buy it I am pretty sure she will like it.
