My shameless brag is a bittersweet moment. My daughter played her last high school game a few weeks ago. Because she is not playing travel ball this summer or playing in college, her softball career is essentially over. She had a wonderful senior year. She was voted the league MVP as a shortstop. This is the 1st time that a pitcher did not take this award home in long time. Also, she was recently selected as a Pennsylvania Coaches first team All-State Shortstop. She compiled 110 hits and scored 108 runs during her high school career and batted over 460. In her senior year she batted .574 with a .651 OBP and only made 3 errors in a 22 game season. She was the starting shortstop for 4 years and her team that won 3 league titles and 4 straight district titles. Our house now seems empty without softball. She is my favorite athlete and after her last game I shouted, so everyone would hear me, that she was my hero. She ran off of the field gave me a big hug and we both cried our eyes out. Three days later, she asked me to have a catch and take her to the batting cages. This I will never forget.

That's great Coach. Your DD had a great HS career topped of with a stellar SR season. Congrats.

I expect there will be a few tears shed in our house when DD plays her last game.

Give it some time. She just might miss it more than she thinks. Besides, there are women's teams always looking for players. BB came home yesterday and had been asked to play for a women's team who was short in our local tournament. It is a very good tournament with women's teams from all over Illinois and Missouri. Anyway, she played and went 2 for 3 with a grandslam. She played 1B, LF, CF, and SS. We didn't even know she was going to play and so, I missed it. These women's teams are a lot of fun to watch IF they are competitive. If not, it is horrible to watch.

I thought that your thread might be some place to post this as well. BB had an old friend but former HS opponent come up to her yesterday that was playing on this team. She congratulated BB on her career. Then, the young lady said that she went on to college to play as well. BB didn't know that and the young lady related that she went to a very good academic D-III that had an open tryout. This young lady didn't know anyone on campus and so went. Really liked the girls on the team and was asked to be on the team. This young lady, who also just graduated, said it was one of the best things she has ever done. She found study partners for classes and a whole set of friends. The athletic schedule was not as demanding but did take some time from studies. Still, I think that this might be some thing for your dd to consider depending upon where she heads to school.

bittersweet indeed...this got me thinking how many of us have called our DDs our hero. I think this is a special thing for a dad to say to a daughter. I know I have told each of my girls at one point that they were my hero.

JAD- Before entering her junior year, she had severe shin splints and suffered a bad concussion and did not play that summer or fall and missed many college showcases and camps. Last summer, she decided on a college, was accepted ( she was #2 in her class) and went to a camp there. The coach of her college's team advised her to try-out as a walk on. He said that all the 2015 graduate slots were taken. At that point, she decided that she would only play high school ball this year. I asked her why not give it a try and her response was " I like softball,I don't love it". That's all I needed to hear. Her best friend , who is one of our areas best pitchers, signed to play at my daughter's college as well as 2 other girls whom she has played with on various teams. Who knows?

Wanna bet $1 that your DD ends up playing in college?

Probably the surest way to minimize that potential is to push her into it. Even if she doesn't play her first year, she may decide that it is important enough to her to make it a priority and give it a shot the year after. Regardless, it needs to be her decision!

He said that all the 2015 graduate slots were taken.

This is normally code for 'we have money but if we can get you free, then we can spend it on someone else.' Especially if they knew your DD was already probably coming to the college softball or not.

A lot of the bigger colleges have competitive softball intramural leagues.
At the really big schools, some of these teams are really good, with tryouts required.
For a lot of ladies this gives them something in between NCAA softball and nothing at all.
