Other side of the coin: number nine hitter finally cranks one over the center fielders head (who was playing pretty shallow) for a triple. Coach's significant other scores it an error. When questioned by a media person sitting next to her asked "an error? really how is that an error?" the answer...
Believe it or not we have some of those here in east Tennessee as well. In fact our team (Middle School) won a tournament a couple of years ago in similar conditions. The high temp on the final day was 39, but the wind chill stayed below freezing all day. We had to win five games that day with...
I came up through the ranks with my daughters, coached Little League, started a TB team (boy was that an eye-opener) then when I made a career change to become a public school educator I took on the MS program. Where I am, we have one MS and one HS in the county. There is alot of pride in the...
I really feel for you HS teams that only get twenty games a year. Here even our middle schools get that. But to be totally honest, there is an eighteen game count, but a tournament only counts as two. Post season tournaments do not count in that total either.
Agree! As a MS coach I occasionally get a comment or an email from a teacher that wants/demands that I punish a player (their favorite is to make them run laps) for something that happened in their classroom. For some reason, they cannot see that their classroom management issues have nothing to...
I have a quick question. can you be charged with a defensive conference between half innings? Earlier this week we were playing (middle school, NFHS rules) and at the end of our at-bat (I was coaching first base) I head back to the dugout. Per my usual routine, I pick up the ball, kick a little...
I coach Middle school ball (seventh and eighth grades) and my school district has always allowed me (or required me) to have one adult female (unpaid) as an assistant coach. Most years it was a mom that had come up through the rec league ranks. I have been very fortunate the last five years with...
Just a few thoughts from a fellow MS coach:
This is my ninth season coaching school ball (did the Rec league thing and coached all three of my DDs through TB), but I know your situation may be different from mine. With Tournaments, we can get in about 22 games (March - May) with the Varsity...
When DD1 was a catcher, we were having a problem in our school system with staph infections. I felt it would be a great idea for her to keep some chlorox wipes in her bag to wipe down her gear after games. She kept them in one of those resealable freezer bags. So one weekend as she was heading...
I want to say thanks to all of you that responded to this post. Years ago, I had DD1 rip her helmet off for everything. Since then I have learned better. Today I posted this to our team fb page:
Should a Catcher keep her helmet on? I say YES. Here is my reasoning:
1. You waste valuable time...
When DD1 was a HS senior, she had a hairline fracture in one of the bones in her throwing hand. We were able to find a pair of padded football gloves that helped protect and cushion it. For the life of me, I cannot remember what brand they were though.
I coach our MS team, and am helping out LL by Umpiring games once our season was completed. Unfortunately, there were only enough rules bought for the coaches. I have been umpiring for three weeks now without the official LL rules, so I have relied on my NFHS and ASA experience. It has been...
Hey lets not be too hard on Texas. We have similar problems with priorities here in Tennessee, and truth be told, all over the country.
It is a battle coaching in a school system, and dealing with the (mis)allocation of funds when it comes to sports.
