    New Coach, advice appreciated

haha. I just wanted them to have somewhere to put the earplugs when we stopped using them, but they know me well enough that it could have been for anything, or nothing. But the fact that I had some of them scrambling to find practice attire with pockets amused me. I'm always trying to get in...

    wilson glove

If that's your price range, look into the mizuno supreme series. Or if you can go a bit more, look at the mvp prime. They're sold a dick's sporting goods. They break in very quickly and have a great pocket. I've used one for a few years, and we have a few girls on the team that have one. They're...

    New Coach, advice appreciated

One day I had practice all to myself. I was tired of watching the girls not communicating, so I told them on the group chat to make sure they had pockets. Didn't tell them why, and they were all like "WHY DO WE NEED POCKETS!!!" I brought them all foam earplugs to wear on the field. Then I...

    New Coach, advice appreciated

I constantly see people recommending running players through stations. Some tee work here, some popups, some grounders, etc. I hate stations. Any time you get girls standing in any kind of line without 100% direct supervision, they'll goof off. Leave them alone and they'll goof off and whoever...

Sorry ... the WORST game I have ever seen. EVER.

Some of these awful teams actually have good, knowledgeable coaches. There just isn't enough time to get kids up to speed in 6 weeks. Rec is everything to a program. Just having girls show up to middle school able to throw and catch accelerates the program by YEARS. When rec was restarted in...

    Are New Balls Slick?

I've seen the ones from Dick's warp after one hit. I smacked one in old man slowpitch practice, and by the time it hit the ground it was wobbly. Throw only, or like...8U is the only safe place for them.

    Are New Balls Slick?

They are absolute turds. The surface breaks really easily if they hit a wall or something They get super slick and I swear the shrink a little. And they go dead really fast. They're like one step above one of the Dick's branded practice balls.

End of an awesome ride as a softball dad

My daughter's pitching legacy will be all the busted rubbermaid totes in the basement.

    Are New Balls Slick?

As far as I'm concerned, there is no other ball than the Dudley. Grippy and never go slick, perfect seams, durable, seemingly waterproof, and hardly lose any pop over time. We have Thunder Heats in the practice bucket that have been getting beat on for at least three years and are still better...

    Comfortable Turfs

I think the ones I wore when I coached are NB 3000. I think I paid like 90 for them. Hard as rocks from day 1. Now I just use them for yard work, but I can't deal with them for too long. If I was gonna buy turfs again I would probably look into something more expensive, even if it's NB again.

The Saga of Rebuilding a School Program: A parent-coach's journal

Well thanks, and thanks for reading! I'm not an official coach on this team, but I help work with them all summer and I try to help with some pitching instruction when needed. That's what I'd really like to continue doing as the years ago by. Although I've learned a ton about pitching, trying to...

    Gotta love the softball family

Dang. Maybe I should do the same.

The Saga of Rebuilding a School Program: A parent-coach's journal

It's crazy. There's one girl in particular who literally went 6 for 67 last year with 36 strikeouts, showed up to like two offseason practices, and now is sitting at .421. Shes gotten really good at taking an early, slow swing and letting that $550 barrel bloop it into the shallow grass. A...

    Defacing the Ball

I always say I'm gonna name my next band Brontosaurus Rex, but this one may have taken the #1 spot.

The Saga of Rebuilding a School Program: A parent-coach's journal

The grind continues. The defense has finally settled-in and is playing halfway decently when the lineup is consistent. DD's ankle took a turn for the worse, along with an allergic reaction and low white blood cell count we believe was caused by a strong antibiotic. She missed a few games, but...

    Defacing the Ball

It's interesting that this discussion came up. This happened to my daughter over the weekend. I looked over at her between innings and she was grinding the ball around in the dirt by the rubber. I've never seen her do that, and remarked to my wife that it's illegal and figured there was a chunk...

    Beginner pitcher vs Beginner Coach

I don't disagree with you. A step pitch is fine if the timing is right. It's certainly the simplest way to get a girl throwing. Leg and core strength is always gonna be a big factor for younger pitchers. I really only work with one kid (brand new, no game pitching yet) other than my daughter...

    Beginner pitcher vs Beginner Coach

Yep. Both arms still straight out in front. I look first at the drive foot. At 3:00-ish all the bodyweight should have moved forward and the toes should be turning over. The back leg will be fully or nearly fully extended, and the front knee will still be driving out. The body is still in...

    Beginner pitcher vs Beginner Coach

I've thought about this A LOT. Some kind of simple manual for starters and some kind of repair manual for the massive amount of intermediates with the exact same flaws. I help on facebook advice pages and lots of people are spotting specific flaws--and they're absolutely correct. But most of...
