School Bell Schedules and High School Games

DD's school doesn't have lights, but it does have two side-by-side softball fields. That allows the varsity and JV games to start at the same time (4 pm). (It also gives the girls more room to practice.) It's going to be strange next fall when DD isn't out there!

    Psat

Yep, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, LOL, I got a National Merit Scholarship, and it all starts with the PSAT. If you don't take the PSAT and get into the "pool" you are out of the running for a National Merit even if you ace the SATs. How is everyone? I sure miss DFP!

Sadly, playing softball has come to an end for DD.

The first two concussions were with a Worth helmet. The last two were with the Rawlings Blackout helmet. She was on a Worth-sponsored team, thus the Worth/Rawlings products.

    Haters gonna hate.

I couldn't agree more. Jessica Mendoza would definitely be a big upgrade from Rex Huddler. I love the Royals, but I'm sick to death of that guy.

The talk I was hoping wouldn't happen

Oh, man, the Quad Cities. We used to try to make a pit stop there on our way from KC to Chicago. It was hard to find a nice gas station during the day, but in the years we made the trip at night while DD slept, it was impossible. They roll up the sidewalks once night falls. After having to...

    When is enough enough?

I kinda like a manager who bats roster at 10U, even on Sundays. IMO, at that age player development is more important than the trophy. On the fastballs away against the batter who was fouling them off; there's not enough info here. How was she fouling them off? Was the batter late on them...

Sadly, playing softball has come to an end for DD.

Nope, each and every one was a foul tip back to her helmet while she was catching. Not much you can do about foul tips. They happen too fast. She just had a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. She usually won the collisions at the plate. ;-) ...Although there was one of...

Sadly, playing softball has come to an end for DD.

She had concussion number 3 last spring and dropped travel after the season ended. We thought HS ball with its much shorter season would be less risky. Unfortunately, she got concussion number 4 at a HS tournament 3 weeks ago tonight. She lost several hours of memory on that day and she's...

    What makes a good catcher?

Quick answer: Catcher A. Catcher B "allows some passed balls in crucial situations" --- that is not acceptable. I'm interested in knowing how well they receive the ball. Given that you describe catcher A as more fundamentally sound, I'd expect her to be the better receiver, and...

I am a bad softball mom.

LOL, that's what I was thinking. As the season progresses, I'm hearing more than I did last year and am starting to realize that if she had lines of communication with other players, she may well have heard enough to shy away even though she had never played for the coach. The team...

    When to get gear

Darn, my earlier post seems to have disappeared... IMO YOU are the one who will be watching the NECC DVD. It's 3 hours long and crammed with info. When DD was young, I watched it through several times and made notes on things I wanted to remember/emphasize and on exactly where the...

I am a bad softball mom.

I believe the freshman pitcher who did come out for softball is having second thoughts and thinking of going out for v-ball next year. Today DD said if she was any good at v-ball, she might do the same. It seems as though last year the senior girls shielded the younger ones from a lot of the...

I am a bad softball mom.

Hmm, I'm not sure I would have known there was a young pitcher coming along if DD wasn't a catcher...

    Participation awards

Yes, I would let her accept her varsity letter, if she's fulfilled the requirements to earn it, no matter whether the team had a winning season or not.

I am a bad softball mom.

DD's HS team is playing across town in a tournament today and I decided not to go. The season is young, but they have yet to win a game. In fact, they were playing to determine who would be the absolute last place team in the tournament and who would be the next to last place team in the...

Thought it was a virus, but!

Ah, ok, I feel better now, lol. Yes, my DD's high school uses Impact. I'm glad they're testing the athletes at her school; I'm sure she's eager to get back, but try to get her to take it carefully if she'll listen. I've heard (and DD says this too) that the tests themselves are quite a...

Thought it was a virus, but!

Um, I'm late to the party, but that's not really enough. They need to get her on the concussion protocol, where she comes back in baby steps--and never starts moving through the steps until she's symptom free. I'd expect a full practice to be at least 1-2 weeks away. My opinion as a Mom of...

    Thnk we're done.

Oh, man, THAT wasn't fair! :-D The build season is grueling, but IMO it's a pretty darn good intro to real life work situations. There you are with a hot project with a fixed due date and a limited amount of resources. Who's going to step up with ideas and/or elbow grease to get it done...

    The Grass Isn't Alway Greener

I definitely think it would apply to everyone as a batter. After all, just as it's easy to have a great ERA against mediocre hitting, it's easy to have a great batting average against mediocre pitching. Merely being patient enough not to swing at junk and waiting for the nearly inevitable...

    New Softball Mom here

Yes, that's us too. I ran track way back in HS, but seeing me try to throw or catch a softball---it's not pretty, lol. Back when she was little I would go out and do my best with her. All that stopped in middle school when I got nailed in the eye with a throw that glanced off the tip of my...
