    Give me your ruling

Ditto on Honus' answer. In order for the run not to count, either the final out of the inning has to be a force-out, or has to happen before the runner crosses the plate. Another hypothetical situation, say you have runners on 1st & 3rd with one out. The batter hits a ground ball to F3. F3...

    Hard contact... obstruction? ejection?

I agree completely on situations 2 & 3, but I have a question on situation #1. Typically when there is a potential play from RF to 1B, the runner is running through the bag, similar to a ball to the infield. If she is rounding the bag on that play, it seems to me she is attempting to interfere...

10U, runner on 3rd, post pitch, how do you defend?

Any way you defend it, you need to execute well (a challenge with 10U). Unless she is way off the bag, and there is a reasonable shot at getting her at 3B or in a rundown (practice those rundowns!!!), I wouldn't burn my catcher out chasing her back to 3B. After the pitch, I would have the...

Unfair (Unethical IMO) League Set Up

Sounds like a pretty lousy deal for the kids in a rec league. I have to believe there are a lot of unhappy parents and other coaches. Maybe time for a hostile takeover of the board to get the egomaniacs out. Alternatively, I guess all the coaches of the non-stacked teams could get together...

    When should a team fold?

I think you also need to have 2 catchers. To ask one kid to catch 3 games on a Saturday, and up to 3-4 games in a row on a Sunday in 90+ degree weather is crazy.

    When should a team fold?

Not sure if you are talking about the current season, or for next year. But in either case, why penalize the girls that show the commitment by splitting them up? If there is a strong core group of coaches & players, work on a way to keep them together. For this season, I would start by...

    Advice on (home) cuts

#1. Yes...SS & 2B are there for relays if the OF is to far to reach Home (at least with a one-hopper). If the ball is shallow enough for the OF to reach (generally if it drops in front of her) she should throw to Home, #2. Not quite sure what you are asking, but the Catcher is always making...

First visit to DIII - some help please!

I can understand them making strictly academic awards that early, since there is no need for FAFSA information, but I would expect any need-based awards to have to wait until the FASFA is complete. For the OP: the Financial Aid office can probably tell you how they handle international...

First visit to DIII - some help please!

At a first visit, the financial aid office won't be able to be too specific about your DD. Until they review her application and FASFA results, they can't say specifically what they can give her. However, they should be able to give you some historic or general info such as: what %age of...

    'Resetting' Glove

As a novice, I found it pretty easy when I pulled the laces through rather than trying to push it. Just pull the old lace through a couple holes, then insert the empty needle back through, thread the lace through the eye, and pull it through. That way you don't lose track of where the laces go.

    'Resetting' Glove

I think you can re-lace most of the important parts yourself...fingers, web, etc. Go out and buy the new laces, and then you'll need a lacing needle and a pair of needle-nose pliers. When I did my DD's, as I pulled the old laces out through each hole, I just followed right behind with the new...

First visit to DIII - some help please!

One other thought...assuming she likes the school in general. After getting a sense for the team (coaches style, competitive level, teammates, etc.), she has to decide whether she "likes" the team, and will enjoy playing on it. Since there is no athletic money involve, I think this is the most...

First visit to DIII - some help please!

The answer to the big question is yes...private schools have access to scholarship & grant money that public universities may not. Since there is no formal athletic money in DIII, the awards generally are based on a combination of academic record/leadership and need. In some institutions...

    Another Infield Fly Rule Experience

Doesn't make sense to me. Not sure if they can call the IFR after the play is over, since the runners will react differently if it called during the play. But even if they can, all the IFR means is that the batter is out whether the catch is made or not. Since she did not make the catch, the...

How should players address their coach??

Could be the last name, first name or nickname (whatever the coach's preference), but it should ALWAYS be preceded by "Coach" Coach Dave...Coach Wilson...Coach Manny... All of those are OK with me. It all starts with the way you introduce yourself to them at the beginning. And continues with...

Where do the "best" go to play college?

Another way I have seen college SB players stay involved in the game after graduating is to get involved in umpiring. Generally it is just for a few bucks on the side, but if they are good, they can advance to NCAA level. Not sure even there if it is enough to make a living (maybe at D1), but...

    Pitching Rules and their application

All very true, it's a tough call. I know it's a grey area, but at that age, my rough rule of thumb is that if I don't feel my team is being put at a disadvantage by it, I am not going to nit-pick it.

    Pitching Rules and their application

As an opposing coach, I would never get too worked up over IP's at a 10U & 12U level, unless it was giving the pitcher an unfair advantage (like a significant crow-hop). Calling a young kid on it during a game serves no other purpose than to rattle her, and mess with her confidence, since there...

Umpire's "word play" to interpret obstruction rule.

IMO it was also to point out that just because the obstructed runner did not try to advance, that doesn't mean she should not be awarded the next base. I think that is a common misunderstanding by coaches (and some umps unfortunately). So if I am coaching in that situation, I'm going to...

    HS Softball team is terrible

Just remember that the HS kids you are comparing her to are not the kids she will be playing with. If it is worth worrying about at all, you should be looking at kids in the area that are in 5th, 6th & 7th grade now. That will be her HS team. How many kids in that age group play TB? Rec...
