I think situations like this one, and illegal pitches, don’t get called under the guise of “game management” or “don’t go looking for trouble”.
As others have said, no where in the rule book is it spelled out that the defense has to know the situation while the offense gets to skate.
Some...
It’s a judgement call. A case could be made that the batter running to first when they aren’t allowed to is in fact interference; the NFHS rule set doesn’t define what “confuses” entails, but in my judgment this certainly is confusing for the catcher in this case.
From a game management and...
NFHS rule 10-2-3-G allows the plate umpire to “make final decision on points not covered by the rules.”
In this case, batter, back in the box, run does not count, get back on third.
Well, the rule does mention “an act that confuses any fielder.” I think a case could be made that the act of the batter running to first base when they aren’t entitled to confused the catcher.
Now, the offensive coach would probably argue, maybe even correctly, that the batter just lost track...
The NFHS rule set doesn’t define what constitutes “confuses any fielder”, but I think a case can be made for interference.
In the USA rule set, 8-7-P states in part, “a runner continuing to run and draw a throw may be considered a form of interference.”
Runner closest to home is also out...
A friend described this recent play to me:
Runner on 2nd, 2 outs a 2-1 count on the batter; pitcher throws a change up that the batter swings at misses. Ball hits the dirt before the catcher catches it. Runner on 2nd broke for third on pitch release.
Batter takes off for first thinking it...
What to do? Excellent question.
I’m guessing that some umpires don’t call it as it could be a combination of “contact is part of the sport” and “I’m not making a call that will eject a player” (and maybe her coach).
Personally, I think out and ejection is the proper penalty. The powers that...
Malicious contact is a rule and call that I think needs some attention.
Especially since it cancels obstruction. Yes, sometimes the throw pulls the defender into the path of the runner and it’s just a train wreck, but I think the call isn’t called enough.
NFHS posted a video about obstruction on a play at the plate.
Umpire called the runner out/no obstruction.
Could a case be made for obstruction/safe? No, the runner did not change their path, but it sure looks like they were impeded.
This ^^^^.
Points of Emphasis are great, provided umpires and coaches emphasize them. Unfortunately, a lot of the time they aren’t.
My own take on why some of my fellow umpires don’t make necessary calls is that from a game management perspective they don’t want to ruffle feathers.
Not...
In my judgement, not illegal.
Here she is just after her hands separate, the start of the pitch;
her pivot foot is still in contact with the pitcher’s plate. I would not consider this an infraction of USA Rule 6A-3-J, which reads “Pushing off with the pivot foot from a place other than the...
In my training, I was taught that working solo my priority is pre-pitch preliminaries and then focus on the pitch (ball or strike). Very difficult to split your attention between feet and the pitch.
I’ve never called a foot infraction working by myself. I’m in season 6, so still early days.
