I don't know enough to know if 63 is the magic number number. However, none of the to 60 pitchers in the state broke 60 can't be true. My DD's HS's number 1 throws 65, the number 2 throws about 63, and the next 2 throw 60. Another girl in our county throws 70. Here in FL, I doubt that any of the top 60in the state throws less than 60. We see 60 in travel ball about every game in decent tourneys.

That average pitch speed article quoted above is not even close to accurate in FL. As I said, 1 pitcher in our county throws 70 (lefty no less), and there's half a dozen over 60. My DD hits 60 with her fastball, but her breaking pitches are 2-3 mph slower. She's slow comparatively.

So are you ignoring all the NFCA camps with the best pitchers in the country work out for colleges. I went to the Queen of Diamonds last year. Read more than a few profiles of these fast balls speeds. None hit the speed that was on the profile.. Only the pitcher from Japan hits 70 against team USA. I hear this all the time, till I see it on the gun and not from a DAD, then I will believe it.

IMHO, I have not seen a pitcher in HS that can actually throw that hard. Not that they don't exist. I did go the the FHSAA state finals this year. There were 3 or 4 pitchers hitting 62-63 mph. The Naples pitcher, who also pitched for Team N Fla, was hitting 63 pretty consistently. Of course, she did sign with Alabama. I may have missed someone though.

My DD threw consistently at 62-63 MPH as a D1 pitcher. Her one time maximum (what she could throw once or twice during a game if the moon, stars and sun aligned) was 67 MPH as a college senior. She was consistently throwing 60 MPH as a HS senior. She had stretched her one-time maximum speed to 65 MPH as a college sophomore.

There was a speed gun for the ESPN Rise 18U championship game. Neither pitcher threw faster than 62 MPH.

Generally, if your DD can throw 60 MPH+ for 200 pitches in a row, then she might be able to pitch at the D1 level, assuming she has a great breaking pitch, great control and an off-speed pitch.

SBFAMILY - I'm not ignoring "all the top pitchers in the country" at NFCA camps - I just don't think all the best pitchers in the country go to the NFCA camps, because they don't need to. They are recruited and committed in other venues, and don't need to go those camps.

As for your DAD comment - whatever. Just because you don't believe doesn't mean it isn't so.

This is a few years old - she was just a freshman. Last year, as a senior, she reached almost 1200 strikeouts for her HS career. She is at USF now.

Sports: Nevins surrounded by buzz

JOE - As for the FHSAA finals, at least 2 of the final 4 pitchers in 5A were over 60 (East Lake and East Bay). Same for 4A (Dunellon and Naples). I didn't see any of the other classes, so I can't comment. Of course, those kids are UF, UA, and NCSU signees.

SLUGGERS - Agree with you generally, like usual.

State of Confusion
Speed begins dropping the moment the ball leaves the pitchers hand. A pitch will slow by several mph between the release and the batter. Air drag slows it. What are you calling the speed of the pitch? The speed at the release? The speed where it crosses the plate? The avg speed? What is the speed gun aimed at? Is it picking up the release? When you time with a gun, you will often see 2 speeds, an initial transient speed for a split second that is higher , and then a second lower final speed reading. Which one are they using? Do they even know what is happening and why?

Does it matter? If you do enough readings, won't it all 'even out' after a while? Would you prefer a statistical sample of 100 pitches or 50? Should a person use multiple speed guns? What is the error associated with less expensive speed guns? How about operator error?

And, finally, don't you hate rhetorical question?

Quite sure that one requirement is that you have to have a college degree...among other things. The minimum grade point average requirement for consideration is a team GPA of 3.00..
