College coaches talking about the problems with early recruiting reminds me of politicians talking about campaign finance reform. It is a lot of disingenuous hot air and there is no real intention on their part of stopping it.

If you're pointing at Sue Enquist, I'd say you're right - she refuses to identify the problem and offers a toothless and unworkable solution. If you're talking about the linked article about the Ivies, who don't offer athletic scholarships, I'd say you're wrong.

I have had a few players go on to the Ivies and some very good D3 (high academic) schools. I have never heard of these schools recruiting 8th graders. In fact they are notoriously slow and very methodical due to the academic requirements. I find it interesting that folks who do not offer athletic scholarships are taking a stand and lecturing those who do. Not sure of their end game.

Probably sour grapes due to slim pickings after the D1/D2/NAIA/JUCO have picked over the recruits.

This may be part of the motivation*, but there's no arguing that the current process is a complete mess.

* Edited to add that the Ivies and other top academic schools are fishing in very different prospective student-athlete pools e.g., how many FP players are deciding between the likes of Harvard or Brown etc and Oklahoma or Alabama etc.?
