So DD has been sending emails to a certain school who expressed some interest in her via a response to her TB coach, but recently noticed that they verballed a player at her same position and same graduation year. Is that a sign to mark the school off the list and move along? The school is not necessarily a dream school, but it ranks high nationally for her major and appears to be a great fit athletically.

What position does your DD play? It is not unusual for a team to sign multiple MIF and OF in a class. Some schools will even take multiple pitchers and catchers in the same class, especially if one of them has a BIG stick and could be a 1B or DH.

I would not write them off, but DO NOT put all of your eggs in one basket!

She is a catcher. According to my stealthy cyber stalking abilities the committed kid does wield a big stick more so than my DD who can still bang it out, but not on the regular. She has eggs all over the place!!! I will share something that I thought was kind of neat. DD recently attended the Headfirst Honor Roll camp which is by far the best camp DD has attended by a long shot. They encourage interaction with the coaches and when she was talking to a few that she had been emailing, they knew who she was. One of the coaches knew her by name and was on the lookout for her. So that experience does validate that sending emails and videos does work, but it is difficult to gauge as it's a one way conversation for the most part. Next step, is picking up the 50 lb phone and making some calls.

Don't write a school off but make sure your daughter has options. It sounds like she does. I have seen college coaches move girls all over. My DD never played 3B until college. She was a catcher and outfielder before that.

Headfirst Honor Roll Camps are GREAT showcases and opportunities to interact with coaches. My daughter too recently went to the NY camp. She has been in contact with a number of coaches for several months (including going to camps on campus), which makes a huge difference at events like Headfirst because those coaches already know you and know to watch for you.

At the end of the day, however, your daughter may need to just flat out ask the school where she stands on their recruiting list. Our experience is that coaches appreciate that and will be honest with you. Worst case, they tell you that there are prospects higher on their list for your year/position. At least you'll know and can spend your time focusing on other opportunities.

As we move closer to the 2017 class early signing period (Nov 9-16), I am noticing some "shuffling" of players. One player leaves for another school and it creates a "domino" effect. Got a call yesterday from a coach who's 2017 pitcher just decommitted so she could visit another school. If the school she visits does not take her, or have enough money in their budget it will be interesting to see how it plays out for her. Kind of a "bird in the hand vs. two in the bush" scenario.

Those decommits open the door for kids who might not have had a chance.

Sometimes being uncommitted late can have some benefits. However, as some have said in other threads, the chance of getting money late vs early is probably less. Coaches leaving can cause a huge domino effect as players look for another program.
