DD plays field hockey and her coach has Saturday practices. She's a 2018 and really trying to focus on getting recruited for softball. It just so happens that two of the best showcases her softball team is scheduled to attend take place on weekends when she either has a big game the following Monday or she will be either in or getting ready for (or possibly starting to play in) playoffs. Her FH team is pretty good and has a decent shot at going far this year - she is a key player on the team and was top scorer last season, so I think missing will be out of the question.

I guess we should just take this for what it is and identify winter showcases she might be able to guest play at instead (her team is not scheduled for any) and camps she could go to. Does anyone know the Myrtle Beach early signing showcase - is that a good one? There are a couple of teams from our area that I know are going to that - maybe she could talk with their coaches.

Any advice? Has anyone else gone through something similar?

Unless she has contacted college coaches to ask them to come watch her play in those showcases and they said they will be there I wouldnt worry about missing them. I mean yes she might get noticed by a coach at the showcase but in my experience sometimes most coaches are watching players that have contacted them. There are usually individual showcases also where players are worked out in front of or by college coaches.

In GA we play HS softball Aug - Oct, but there are several good showcases in Nov that DD's team attends. How long does field hockey last?

It's a good showcase if a coach who is interested in your DD is going to be there. I believe the Myrtle Beach showcase will publish what coaches have attended in the past.

You might know this already, but I'll repeat what AV said - You might be randomly noticed at a showcase if DD hits 2 dingers off a pitcher that Coastal Carolina is scouting, but that shouldn't be the gameplan. You want to contact coaches, go to their camps, etc., to entice them to watch you at a showcase.

Fall HS sports do interfere a little w/ softball recruiting. But as JAD mentioned, Georgia plays HS softball in the fall, and last I checked, there are a lot of Georgia players doing well in college softball.

One is the D9 showcase in FL at the end of October - I know at least some of the schools she's interested in will have coaches there, at least they have in the past. She hasn't contacted them yet about this (or any other) showcase so I guess we'll just have to hold off on contacting anyone until we know for sure which showcases DD will actually be able to attend.

Playoffs start at the end of October and go into mid-November. I will definitely look into options, both individual showcases and camps, starting after playoffs are done.

A lot of college coaches have winter camps that your DD could attend. Choose wisely as you can only be in so many places at once. When my DD was going through the recruiting process we realized that by attending winter camps she did not get her traditional break from Thanksgiving to mid-January, so she essential pitched for 20 months straight.

The D9 is a pretty big deal and as a 2018, this is her year. D1 coaches are filling those spots now. If she is looking more D3 your prime season is next summer.

I know and DD definitely would like to go D1. this is what is really bothering me since that one will come right at playoff time. I told my husband last night maybe we will have to make a last minute decision based on the FH playoff schedule - I looked back at the calendar for playoffs last year and they had playoff games that last Friday and Saturday in October. DDs team had a bye and didn't play until Monday but we didn't find out their schedule until the last Thursday in October. Ugh!

Last Fall was brutal for my freshman DD. She was playing basketball, Fall showcasing, and theater arts. On a few occasions the perfect storm of all activities colliding happened and she had to juggle each one. She realized that she can't do everything. There is just not enough time in the day. Too bad she is not playing basketball this year, which is the one thing that made her a better stronger softball player. A crappy bball coach made that decision very easy for her. I really enjoyed watching her play.

Many coaches of all divisions are playing a Fall Ball schedule themselves. Unless an outstanding player has contacted the coaches beforehand, and they are truly interested in them as a player, I doubt that many coaches would be at said showcase to "discover" her. If, on the other hand, she had invited a coach to see her, or a coach that she has contacted previously would be there simply to watch various players, then , the field hockey has to go. Remember, at this age, many players are a single sport player and the old adage of "hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard" will come into play...especially at this level of play in Softball.
