I understand that every situation is probably different, but I was curious to hear the experiences of some of you that had DD who have played at various colleges.

Do the girls typically live in dorms? Are there typically specific athletic dorms/floors of dorms where the team is generally in the same place? Do university rules (like freshmen/sophomores must live in dorms) apply to athletes just like any other student? Please forgive my ignorance.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have a girl in college yet, but I thought it was interesting what they told us at one University. They had one newer dorm building and it was the only one with air conditioning. The athletes stay in the one with air conditioning. I wonder how the non-athletes feel about this?
So far every college we've visited requires freshman to stay in a dorm no matter what and a couple schools said they try to pair athletes together while in the dorms.

My DD goes to a JUCO. She lives in one of the newer dorms on her campus. Her dorm room is of the newer apartment style rooms. Each "apartment" has two seperate room for sleeping with each room having 2 girls assigned. Then there is a small common living room and small kitchen with counters, cupboards, a convection microwave and a full size fridge. He r other roommates are also on the team. From what I've heard the softball players all room together but they are scattered between two dorms. In our state, JUCO's can only offer books and tuition scholarships and we pick up the room and board. So depending on your budget some choose to live in the traditional dorm that each 2 person room shares a bathroom.

Many/most schools require freshman that don't live in close proximity (distance varies by school) to live in the dorms. DD's school doesn't give preferential treatment on dorms to athletes besides placing them in the ones closer to the athletic facilities. She originally was going to room last year with a fellow freshman team member until she was invited by a couple older players to room with them in a highly coveted room in the best dorm on campus. She is living off campus this year in a local house that has been rented by softball players for a few years.

My dd lived in campus apartments. The entire team did. They were mixed in apartments with the various sports teams but also with normal students living there as well. Typically, each sports team had an area that they were in. Softball and baseball were located in the same buildings. I think golf and tennis were on the back side of dd's apartment.

Here is a link to the apartment complex dd stayed in:

Mansion Hill

I know of schools that allowed teammates to get houses rented. I've heard terrible things about various school's "softball house."

Freshman softball players at DD's school are required to sta in dorms. im pretty sure they're all in the same dorm, but they want them to expand their social circle so they can't room together. The older girls are in a mix of apartments, dorms and the softball house.

This is how my dd's school is set up. Both of my dd's go to the same school and although technically they could commute we (myself and Mrs. Lenski) felt it was important they leave the nest. We put them in a 2BR 2BA apartment (it's freakin' sweet!) 3 miles away from campus. Also, our house is in a different state than the school and apartment so after a year of residency at the apartment the school fees will drop from the metro rate to the in-state rate which is about a $4,000 a year difference per dd.

Housing varies from school to school. Some coaches prefer that athletes from different sports room together,
most refrain from allowing team mates to room together as freshman since that spend so much time together
at the field etc.

The big picture? Housing is up to the school and its policies in general and many have no special housing criteria
for athletes vs non-athletes. Find the school of choice for the best education and career first and don't concern yourself with housing.
The housing will take care of itself

At my DD's school when we went on Unofficial visit they paired two Softball players with two soccer players and to norm's(non athletes) as the softball players called them. Freshman all required to stay in dorms first year.
