While this is at a baseball audience, pretty much everything he says applies to softball as well (except less scholarships/smaller rosters)

Thanks for sharing! I have a question - @ 2:15 he mentions that the minimum scholarship a school can offer is 25%. Does anyone know if this also applies to softball?

It would be interesting to know if the minimum is 25%. My guess is that is not correct or it may only apply to division 1. I know my scholorship was less than 25% at D1...but the rules may have changed...after all, it has been over 20 years ago!

The 25% minimum and 27 scholarship maximum are both specific to D-I baseball.

15.5.4 Baseball Limitations. There shall be an annual limit of 11.7 on the value of financial aid awards (equivalencies) to counters and an annual limit of 27 on the total number of counters in baseball at each institution. (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/08)
15.5.4.1 Minimum Equivalency Value. An institution shall provide each counter athletically related and other countable financial aid that is equal to or greater than 25 percent of an equivalency. (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/08 for student-athletes who initially enroll full time at any four-year collegiate institution on or after 8/1/08, Revised: 8/9/07)

The 1-year scholarship part is predominantly true, however multi-year scholarships were passed a couple of years ago.

Many baseball players used to get scholarships equivalent to book money. That's what I was offered back in the day (1983).

A $500 "book scholarship" is fairly common in softball. It is given to someone who is basically a preferred walk on. By providing the $500 the kid gets to sign an NLI with her class on signing day and is bound to the terms of the NLI with the institution.

Guys/Gals,

Is there a minimum/maximum number of players on a softball roster like there is in DI baseball?
There are no minimum/maximum numbers of players on rosters for baseball or softball. The limits are on athletic scholarships. Softball does not have any limits on how small or many slices of the pie are given out.

Diddint you work out with Abner Doubleday?

Yeah. He was a no-stride, squish the bug guy. When he decided to enroll at West Point, I gravitated over to Doc Adams who taught trans-rotational hitting, but he hit left handed and my simple brain could not translate what he was saying or showing me. I then hooked up with James Creighton because I overheard a bloke at a pub mention that even though baseball was an amateur sport, Creighton was getting paid and I wanted in on that action. I hooked up with Jimmy, showed him my mad skills, and earned a spot on the Excelsior Club, getting paid $25 under the table. Man could Jimmy hit, and he was the hardest throwing underhand pitcher in the country. Jimmy swung so hard that in his final at-bat he hit a homerun but ruptured his bladder in the process. He died a few days later of internal hemmoraging, and soon after that the Excelsior Club no longer needed my services. It was found out that I was paid a salary and it ruined my amateur status with the NABBP (National Association Of Baseball Players). Baseball eventually turned professional but no teams would give me a sniff. I waited what seemed like decades, and eventually decided to go back to school. Because of my desire to complete my education, I was given back my amatueur status so I could play for my high school. During my senior year I had a few offers to play college ball, all offers equivalent to book money. I decided to focus on my college education and respectfully declined all offers. I attended the University of Cincinnati in their Electrical Engineering program, but discovered foosball and rediscovered alcohol and was only able to sustain a 2.67 GPA. I transferred over to Business Administration and the rest is history. Since my college days I have married, had three children, and have worked for the same company since graduating. I now live vicariously through my children, am morbidly out of shape, and love every minute of it. Life is good.......
