Hello everyone - I was looking for some input / critiquing on my daughters introduction letter prior to attending camps & clinics

Hi Coach XXXXXX,

My name is XXXXXXX; I am a freshman at XXXXXXX High School in XXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXX.

Last year as an eight grader I was the starting XXXXXXXX for the XXXXXXXX Junior Varsity Softball team and I led the team with a XXXXX batting average.

I have played travel softball for the XXXXXXXXXXXX for the past XX years, my primary fielding position is XXXXXXX and my primarily position in the batting order has been fourth.

My head coach is XXXXXXXXX and my hitting instructor is XXXXXXXXXX

I will be attending your hitting clinic on XXXXXXXXX and I look forward to meeting you.

Have a great day!

Does your daughter have an interest in that school or is she just going to a clinic? If she has an interest in going there and playing for that coach she may want to mention something about the team and school.

I'd drop the middle school part and put in a contact number for the TB coach. Maybe say something about GPA. That seems to be something they want to know right away.

Make sure instead of saying she is a freshman, put her graduation year. For instance, "I'm part of the class of 2018 and my main positions are. ..

This is her 1st mid level Div. 1 clinic, just going more to see how they are run, and get a handle on what to expect. She is 14rs old, she has no clue where she wants to go, just she wants to be able to play softball and snowboard. LOL I know I know !

Her GPA is only 1st qtr of HS - I figured I would save grade information til the summer camps

Let her drive the letter, so it does not sound like an adult wrote it. The letter above sounds like a form letter.

She does not need to mention who her instructors are, nor what her position is in the batting order. They would be more interested in a link to her TB team page.

She should write about her interest in academics/majors, and again, what her GPA is. They would also like to know about her passion for either the college or softball and what she would like to learn at the clinic. You can show passion by watching videos of the COLLEGE softball team or reading last year's press releases (if you are not familiar with them but you should be), and talking about perhaps, a player you admire, or the COLLEGE team's accomplishments, and how you could continue the tradition.

The player should put her name and graduation year in the title of the email.

I like your idea, I am going to give her a list of bullet points which should be included and let her write

Thank you very much. The idea and information provided on this board has been exceptional !

Couple of things that worked for my DD and my other TB players:

Have her get an email address and use it for softball and softball only. Something like:

firstname.lastname2017@domain.com

By using this convention the recipient knows who it is coming from and the grad year.

Had a player a couple years back emailing SEC teams with the email bulldogfan@... Could not understand why she was not getting the time of day from anyone. :)

Go to a stationary store and get a box of generic thank you notes and a book of stamps. Take them to every clinic and showcase. At the end of the event have her write a hand written note to coaches who expressed interest. Find the closest mailbox so the postmark is that day from the location of the event. That will set her apart form the minions spamming the coaches inbox.

Since academics are so important how do you get something in there for a 14YO? Is it just not worth bothering for a 14YO?

If she is taking some advanced classes you may want to mention that. At this point I would not worry too much about it. At 14yo it is great you are getting started with the process, but you have lots of time. For the most part not many coaches are going to get too excited about a 14yo. This is more about getting you and your DD used to the process than making a significant impression with the coaches.
