Does anyone know what the rule is for transferring schools ?
My dd stopped her recruiting process during the summer after her junior year of high school because of some family medical issues. My dd decided she wanted to go to the local JC to be close to home. So my dd enrolled and has started JC this year. One of the colleges that was recruiting her when she was a junior has stayed in touch with her through out this family issue. About 2 weeks into the school year the family issue is all better.
Now the coach that has been recruiting her wants to know if she wants to transfer in the spring so she can play with them this year.
So my question is this, Can my dd play softball if she transfer from a JC to a higher level college after the first
semester ? We live in the northeast so college softball does not officially start till after the first semester. My dd has not signed a roster yet JC does that after the first semester.

Thanks for any help

Im not positive, but I do not believe a coach can keep a player from transferring to a higher division college.

If either or both of the schools has a compliance officer you need to ask them. The rules are really complicated.

“In Division II, the requirements are exactly the same for qualifiers. Division II does not have any rules against midyear transfers playing immediately in any sport. And Division II has no limits in any sport on using physical education credits.”

Sounds like there is no scholarship and maybe she is a walk on? If that is the case and in the absence of an NLI she is not bound to the institution. However, by enrolling in the JC the clock has started on her eligibility.

Speak with the coach that wants her and ask to talk with their NCAA compliance officer to make sure that you understand the situation.

Echo what others have said... Don't get your advice on her scenario here - get it from the potential colleges NCAA compliance office. The rules are complex, difficult to navigate and it is their job either understand them or have the contacts needed at the NCAA office to get help dealing with a specific scenario.

And get the advice in writing - or at least in an email.

Check with your compliance offices. Do not take a short cut around this. And remember once you burn a bridge with the coach telling them she wants to leave. If she dosent leave it can be a long season for her If he would try to fight the transfer. Been thru this and it can get complicated and nasty real fast.
