To you parents of current and recently past scholarship players -

How automatic is it to return year after year and assume the same sholarship profile through graduation?

Is it totally random based on the school? What has been your experience with this?

Assuming we are talking about the athletic portion of the ride, it should go up or at least remain the same each year. If not there is probably an issue. Academics may play into it, behavioral issues, work ethic, etc. And there is always budgetary issues. Performance in and of itself is rarely the issue. Usually there is something else going on that causes the performance issue. Also some coaches are less than diligent with respect to keeping the scholarship consistent. Twice I have had former players contact me very upset because there scholarship was "cut". A quick call by the player to the coach got things iron out. "Oh. We paid for your books last year?"

It is going to vary by the school, coach and how well the player is meeting expectations.

Sometimes it isn't fair - I know of a player that had her scholarship reduced after being PAC-12 Freshman of the Year and 1st team All Pac-12. If a coach has committed more scholarships to incoming players than are being freed up, they have to make cuts/reductions to returning players to get under the limit.

I do remember a few years back when we were on a TB team with a few of a certain Big10 teams relationships. One was "my older sister" and one was "that's my daughter". I remember being at a tourney and there was all this depression from those folks and their families at the tourney and what I found to be the case was that the coaching staff was "turned over" at the school and all the current scholarship deals were thrown off the table. This really shook me to see the impact on those sets of parents.....

Coaching turnover can be a big factor with kids who have "verbaled". They verbal as a 10th grader. New coach comes in a year or so later and the kid has nothing. That deal left with the old coach. I always tell them to have a backup plan.

A couple of years ago, Coach Candrea decided to clean house. It is rumored that the girls that were not invited back, were informed by text.

There is never a guarantee.

If the scholarships get cut are the players free to look else where? I have not been able to find out how that works. Seems like the old bait and switch could take place.
