    Another Obstruction Question:

Depends on the code. In the youth game of softball (NFHS, USA, USSSA), an obstruction means (1) the runner cannot be called out between the two bases where the obstruction occurred, and (2) the umpire has the ability to award the runner whatever would have nullified the obstruction. If the...

Proper way to fill out lineup card with DP if you want them to field in the first inning NFHS

Enjoying the questions and explanations. I get DP/Flex from an umpire perspective, but admittedly don't follow coaches' logic on what they are doing (or think they are doing) most of the time.

    A case for the safety base ... Texas/Texas A&M (Don't coach your players to do this . . .)

That is a very interesting take. There is truth to the claim that safety gear can promote bad and unsafe habits as people begin to take it for granted and just begin to rely on it for a certain level of security.

We see it differently. That’s fine. From my POV, why is she aiming at the field-side corner of the bag at any point? You see her foot bounce as it glances off her calf. Bad defense. Bad offense. Safety base. Don’t teach/coach contact at any level.

Quitting pitching but still playing perspectives

I think your better players can and will do this. “Being a pitcher” often gets ingrained into identity perception, and too many kids cannot let that go. Add into that our natural human fear of change … It takes a special kind of player to say, “Yeah, I can better help the team in another role.”

Ahh … makes sense. You are correct, I misspoke/mistyped/was not clear. I was trying to differentiate between the contact on the ankle and the contact above that (calf) … but that would indeed not be “upper leg” as my brain spit out. My point was that her calf was not in front of the bag so to...

Never said they were. However, intent or reckless behavior that can injure are considered malicious. I expect her to go for the base. That’s my point. Where she lands in her stride she is coming up short and trips, IMO, showing the base was not her intent. I’ve said my peace. We see the...

It’s OK for us to disagree, but making things up and attributing them to me is not acceptable. At no point did I say anything about pants. I pointed to the tear in her sock in an area NOT inline with the runner’s already wrong path and the base. Her foot is obviously obstructing. Her calf is...

Not the first time I've had an unpopular opinion. Obviously we disagree on what the physical evidence shows. 🤷‍♂️ As I have said, I am not arguing that F3 wasn't obstructing; she was. What I am saying, and some of the replies here sadden me, is that obstruction is NOT a license for...

Obstruction is not a license to initiate contact, particularly not malicious contact. This is the part I am saying “Don’t coach your players to do this.” I do not disagree that F3 was obstructing, but she was doing so with her foot, not her leg. Had the runner stepped on her foot, ankle, or...

    A case for the safety base ... Texas/Texas A&M (Don't coach your players to do this . . .)

I’m basing my thoughts on where she did get her initially (look for the cut in her sock — way too high to have just been aiming for her foot) which was not inline with where the runner was heading. I’m not convinced the runner would have even got to the base with the deviation and the leap...

I do agree F3 is set up poorly. If she had stepped on her foot, I would agree with you on the "attempting to get to first" part, as her foot was in front of the bag (obstruction). However, that isn't where she got her. That was a dirty play. The runner was also not exiting the runner's lane...

Tough to call this in real time, but I would like to see an ejection of the runner on this. There is no call for it. She didn't just "step on" F3, and she didn't just get the back of her foot. Yes, F3 was set up awkward, but there was NO call for going after her knee. And yes, the runner...

    Runner interference - dead ball

Although the rulebooks aren’t always written perfectly and you can’t always take them as a direct procedural list, you can follow this section as a step by step: First, the ball is dead. Second, the interfering runner is out. Third, the batter runner is awarded first base. Fourth, all runners...

Given the question, the moniker makes sense.
