I have always been a big believer in the ability of kids, at least certain kids, to learn the nuances of softball through osmosis. I certainly saw it with my own daughters, who were eight years apart. When my older daughter Stefanie was playing, we dragged all the other kids out to her games. We […]

We played in the 8u NSA state championship this year. We had three girls on the team that were very good for that age group. During the tournament these two girls performed plays that us coaches never got around to teaching them.

We were on defense. This tournament was all kid pitch and they allowed base stealing, no drop third strike. Runners on first and second, our pitcher pitches the ball and the hitter hit the ball down the third base line, ball was not hit too hard. 3rd baseman crashes and calls for the ball, pitcher runs to cover the 3rd base bag and we get a force out at third. The two girls that made that play are are both 7u girls, some girls just get it somehow.

Then you got the other scenario. We are on defense again. Runner on second base. Runner on second base tries to steal 3rd base. Our catcher throws the runner out by 4 steps. 3rd baseman never attempts to try to apply the tag. She thought it was a force out. This is the same player that just made a great play in the above scenario. Nothing more than a brain fart. I couldn't do anything but laugh a little bit. It was pretty amazing how much better some of these girls got in 4 months of playing together.

These two girls watch their parents play in a coed slowpitch softball league. It is surprising how much they learn just being around the game.

For sure, Bob. Just being around the game seems to be a pretty darned good teacher. Cool story about your girls. Bet you can't wait to see where they'll be in a few years!

Definitely looking forward to next year. Both girls are moving up to play 10u as 8u players. They will definitely be challenged playing against older girls, and I am sure there will be a learning curve but they should become better in the long run. I suspect we will be a very average b class team next year due to we only have 5 10u girls on the team.

We are now getting ready for travel basketball to start.
