Been meaning to write this post for a little while because I just find this story to be so cool. It’s about a player named Ashley Lambert who clearly appreciates the opportunity she’s been given to play fastpitch softball.* First a little background. Ashley definitely comes from a softball family. She’s been playing since she […]

Interesting. Wearing the USSSA red, although most of the USSSA umpires in Wisconsin also work ASA games. I wonder if my DD 3 will ever have her as an umpire, since we are in an adjacent county to Beloit.

And yes, a knowledgeable umpire can make a difference. I've sometimes seen some umpires give some tips, advice and encouragement to the girls, to help them learn. I even saw that in an ASA game today. An umpire DD 3 had never seen before had already heard of DD 3, and was helpful to her in a game DD 3 was pitching. Her team lost, run ruled, so at least we know the ump didn't throw the game DD 3's way. DD 3 talked about that umpire a lot on the long ride home. It was interesting to learn that the umpires talk about promising players they see, and compare notes.

Actually, Bob, I believe Ashley is umpiring around the north suburbs of Chicago, not Madison. At least this summer. But you never know - she may like it. The red shirt is what a particular officiating organization around here uses - Great Lakes Officiating Association or something like that.

OK, around Wisconsin red is USSSA. DD 3 is at a pretty big USSSA tournament in Beloit this coming weekend. I was wondering if Ashley would be umping there, but I guess not.

Also interesting, I've heard people call umps wearing red "Blue" plenty of times. I mentioned that to a USSSA ump once, he said he'd been called much worse things during games. :)
