Softball is a competitive sport, and as competitors we like to win. But if you’re a coach taking your team to a college showcase it’s best to put your ego aside and focus on showing off your players rather than on the outcome of the game. Even if it means you lose the game. Bunting […]

Interesting. Maybe they're listening to the college coaches who say all the showcases are taking the competitiveness out of players.

The ones my students participated in were basically just pool play with no brackets. For something like that, I say let 'em hack away.

Nice website.

I agree on the bunting, and mostly agree that scores and record don't matter. You don't have to win all your games, but if you consistently lose all your showcase games you won't get invited back.

I cringed a little at the thought of throwing pitches she doesn't use much. I'm picturing the ball either going to the back stop or getting hit over the fence :)

My last showcase was a good game-tied until the 4th-both sides playing very well. The other coach used the flex rules to bat his top 4 hitters the rest of the game and use the same 3 baserunners. I continued to bat roster as all players were there to be seen.

That coach cared more about the end score than the message they sent to the other 7 hitters on their team-your not good enough to showcase your hitting as the score is more important.

Dirty and great leadership were the sarcastic words used by the coaches in attendance and UIC I spoke with afterwords. They really liked how all my girls were trusted to succeed and conditioned to fight regardless of how the odds are stacked against you :)

Remember why you are there coaches. Remember that you are being watched and your actions can kill your girls chances as no coach wants to watch poor sportsmanship. Remember what your teaching your players by your actions too.

TRUST-its more important than anything.

I go to the other extreme. If I am playing your team in a showcase and you have a hitter that has a coach watching we will throw something on the meaty side. Getting kids signed is more important than bragging rights at the end of a showcase.

Let's keep in mind that it is absolutely impossible for some coaches to put aside their colossal egos. We all know the type.
