If you see yourself as the customer then what you are saying is you pay to play. I’m not sure many would agree with that mindset. You can’t buy playing time. If the roster is 12 and every girl comes to practice and works hard and has your same mindset, how does all 12 play every inning?

As a coach, I appreciate the honesty up front as it would save me a lot of future issues. It would be an easy thanks but no thanks for me. That is what I would call a red flag.

To each their own though. Any team/coach that would allow a parent to dictate playing time is not a team I want my kid on.

I get your reply for a high school girl or a high school level travel team....

We are talking 11 year old's turning 12

These are key development years. This is when you lose girls to other interest. I seen many BEAST of a 6th grader.... out of the sports by 9th grade.

I also seen allot of C level 12U players make Varsity by the 9th grade......

The only thing that was wonky about the initial post was the requirement to play every inning..which was the reason I gave the college analogy. Guaranteeing PT or even being in the starting 9, is one thing, wanting your kid to play every inning is a different story.

Sitting sometimes is actually a good thing for a kid..as is getting the grade you deserve ;)

Yeah, but I didn't respond until after he'd already clarified that he didn't literally mean he expects her to play every second of the game.

I just haven't gotten to have any fun being in the middle of any drama in at least 10 hours so you can't expect me to not jump in.

I know at least 1 team in Ohio that your DD will not be playing on... NO ONE on my roster is guaranteed playing time.

Why would you recruit someone when you have 9 solid players actually 11? Then get upset when the parent tells you no.....I am not paying for her to ride your bench? That is what I don't understand

Ok there Mr. Details.. :p and if you wanted 24/7 drama you shouldn't have quit coaching

maybe the coach was hoping your DD would challenge some of his current players? maybe he knew someone was leaving or he was letting someone go?

yes, especially at 12u, everyone deserves decent amount of PT, the families are the ones paying for the team. but no one should really expect to play more than 60% of innings (hopefully at 12u batting the order as much as possible).

I can see tamss13's point on this. Let's look at it from another viewpoint. Your DS has a full-ride at a school in a mid-major conference, say Central Michigan out of the MAC as the starting HB. Suddenly, you and he are contacted by Coach High-and-Mighty from Big ACSEC 14 powerhouse Directional State U. Coach H wants your DS to sign a partial scholarship to come play for him and maybe get some time returning punts. "Of course," says Coach H, "when you are a 5th year senior, you might get enough time to maybe be drafted in the early teen rounds, well because, we are annual contenders for the National Title game.

Are you going to be happy having to pick up the extra cost of school JUST to play for a name program? Remember, in the OP tamss13 said THEY were approached by the other team, they didn't go shopping.

In my admittedly jaded experience- the coach is trying to bolster the end of his bench because he's making a run at being a "for real" A team, which is something that I hate to see in 12u (but see all the time). I could be wrong but it's beyond the "offseason" recruiting period and not really late enough for the legitimate "We have out of town tournaments paid for and injuries/defections have us in trouble" situations.

Recruit during try out season in August? Absolutely. However, no team can have exactly 9 or 10 play every week. vacations, injury, car accidents, etc. And the older they get, the more things draw them away, and the rosters get larger. College rosters are 20-40 girls. You're tell the headcoach if your DD's not the best 9, don't recruit my DD?? Good luck...hard pass.
