This is pretty neat, and perhaps you will find it interesting outside of the Tar Heel State.

A computer rankings guru is rating all of the state's travel teams based on their scores from all organizations. Basically every tournament played in the state.

Would be cool if all states did this. Not that winning is everything, but it would educate parents and coaches about what teams are out there and their general strengths relative to the rest of the state.

Update: Computer rankings of NC's travel teams (April 15) - This Board Rocks

Excerp:

10-and-under: The biggest mover this week is the Swamp Shockers of Whiteville - from No. 19 to No. 6. They went 5-0, outscoring their opponents 67-14, in winning TopGun at North Myrtle Beach last weekend. The Shockers lead the state in victories (18) and are unbeaten vs. N.C. teams (both losses to a S.C. team). The Green Machine 03 of Stanfield remains No. 1 after winning TopGun in Concord, outscoring their opponents 52-3. They are the most dominant No. 1 team in any age division, rated to be at least five runs better than any other 10U team. (Note that a projected margin of victory between teams is the difference between their power ratings.)

How is this not skewed towards teams who play easy tournaments/inferior competition?

Looks like a list of teams to avoid on the surface.

I think the computer model is similar to those for BCS football. It figures out strength of schedule. It's not going to rank Bowling Green No. 8 just because of a 7-0 record. I think that's the idea. In the top 20 that I posted, three teams are only .500, but they're top 20 out of some 100 teams. I assume those three teams are playing other top 20 teams.

Hopefully it works better then BCS rankings or it's just as useless.

Clear evidence that there are still people who are under-employed if they have the time to rank 10U TB teams!

No kidding. I'm sure it takes time to compile this.

But I don't think that means 10U rankings are not worthwhile or valuable. I realize 10U is about development, but just as the score of a game helps a 10U coach determine progress and where his team stands, so do statewide rankings. Without them, I think fewer than half of coaches and parents in 10U have any accurate idea of where they really stand outside of the smaller world of their region.

ASA has its MVP Power Rankings.

TournamentMVP - Power Rankings

Yeah, I've seen those. Glad ASA does that. Not all tournament directors use it, if not mistaken.

But note that the N.C. rankings that I link include scores from every tournament in the state, not just ASA. The ASA rankings are based just only ASA games. In North Carolina, that's less than 10 percent of games played.
