Don't know what school and how big their SB program is but, it may be that the coach made promises to the girls she recruited and is afraid a "walk on stud" may cause more problems with the rest of the team than she is willing to risk. Especially if the player was not expected. She also may think the player is just "shopping" for a team at the last minute. Does not want to disrupt the current team plans for a player that may not be happy, as in Amy's case. Just a guess, but the only reasons I can think of for not offering an immediate spot on the team.

I'd have her talk to the coach and explain that she plans on attending the school whether she plays on the team or not. If that's not enough to get the coach to offer a spot, then she may have to sit out a year. I would just about bet if she shows up for tryouts again next year, she would be on the team.

The coach called the kid back and offered her a scholarship and advised her it was more than the other players were receiving and not to reveal to anyone else what she was offered. Her dad advised it is about 70% of school cost. The dad advised that his daughter text some of the other girls that were at the tryout and none of them had heard anything and he advised he thought some of them did very well in the tryouts.

Seems like a strange way to conduct recruiting, the coach only talked to the kid and not the parents as this time.

Her dad advised this is where she wants to go so she is probably going to take the offer.

Thanks, Peppers. That's starting to make a little more sense to me. The coach DID want her. He just wanted to 1) make sure she was serious and 2) have her step away so that the other girls' tryouts wouldn't be overshadowed. Maybe he was too excited by his unexpected gift from softball heaven to speak as carefully as he should have.... ;-)

Right, strange. There's four words that rarely turn out well: "Don't tell anybody else . . ."

The most scholarships a D1 school has is 12. As you know scholarships are year to year and are renewed. What this means is if you have twenty plus players like most schools do most of them are not on full scholarship. In fact you are more likely to get a partial so get the grades in order and make very high marks on your ACT/SAT.
