Was watching a game on Friday between a top D1 team and a JUCO. JUCO made an error in the bottom of the 6th inning allowing the go ahead run to score to make it a 4-3 ball game. JUCO bats in the top of the 7th and does not score, but instead of the ball game ending 4-3, the home team (D1 school) batted in the bottom of the 7th.

Not only did they bat in the bottom of the 7th, in a game they had already won, the JUCO put in their 4th string everything. The pitcher proceeded to walk 4 or 5 batters, give up a couple of hits and in no time the score is 9-3. After they were up 9-3 with one out and the bases still loaded they called the game. BTW - this was the first game of a double header.

Is this common? Did they do this to give the JUCO's 4th string an inning or did the D1 not want the final score to be so close against a JUCO team?

I'm guessing they just wanted to give the girls playing time. DD'S team had a double header against another d2 team and run ruled then in the first game but the ump said we're going to keep playing. Alot of the players changed on the field after he said that. That was the first game also

Many times they play a full 7 innings in both sides of a DH or they may play a straight 10 innings. All depends on what they agree to. When Chipola played Florida it was always a full 7 even though Gators up by a bunch.

Arizona chiefly plays against JUCOs in Fall and sometimes both teams agree on a different rule set that includes no mercy rule.

Went to a double header DII / JUCO game yesterday and same thing. Full 7 innings regardless of the home team being up going into the bottom of 7. When I asked a guy sitting beside me, he said they get everything they can out of it because fall games count towards the NCAA limit of games played.

NCAA limits on games played and games played in the fall. It is common for coaches to agree to play out the full game including batting in the last inning and ignoring any usual run rules to get full usage of allotted innings.

I thought it was number of playing days, not a limit on actual games or innings?
NCAA D1 fall limits are 45 days and 8 contests (max 3/day).

17.20.1.2 Nonchampionship Segment. An institution’s nonchampionship segment shall be conducted within a period of 45 consecutive days during the months of September, October and November under the following conditions: (Adopted: 1/14/08 effective 8/1/08)

17.20.5.1 Maximum Limitations—Institutional. A member institution shall limit its total playing schedule with outside competition in softball during the institution’s softball playing season to 56 contests (games and scrimmages) during the segment in which the NCAA championship is conducted and eight contests (games and scrimmages) during the nonchampionship segment, except for those contests excluded under Bylaws 17.20.5.3 and 17.20.5.4. Travel to competition in the nonchampionship segment shall be restricted to ground transportation, unless there are no Division I institutions that sponsor the sport located within 400 miles of the institution. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91, 4/26/07 effective 8/1/08, 4/29/10 effective 8/1/10)
