NCAA fines, reprimands Stanford for football, softball violations - SFGate

From the article:

"The NCAA also imposed a one-year “show-cause” penalty against former softball coach John Rittman, meaning that any NCAA school that hires him during that time must conduct compliance education for the coach...The university acknowledged for the first time that Rittman was asked to resign in 2014 because of NCAA rules violations. It said Rittman “disregarded NCAA limits on the number of hours that student-athletes could participate in sport-related activities.”...Stanford said it imposed a penalty of “significant” limitations on softball practice hours under the new coach, Rachel Hanson. The Cardinal have won just two of 48 Pac-12 games over the past two seasons under Hanson."

Stanford football, softball teams violate NCAA rules

From the article:

"The softball violations of the participation rule — not more than 20 hours per week in athletic-related activities — took place from 2010-14. They became known during the controversial ouster of former coach John Rittman."

Really? Twenty hours a week is the D1 rule? DD did more than that last year at her D3.

At the D=II my dd played at, they had a very strict limit on anything team related per practice etc. I can remember dd mentioning that once she thought that they would go over and Coach stopped everyone and sent them home. I'm sure most of you that have had dd's play in college have noted some statement by your dd as to how strict these schools adhere to NCAA Requirements.

Curious when the clock starts and stops on ''athletic-related activities.'' For practices, I guess that's easy enough. What about games? One hour before the game? Is it when you are required to report? You count time in between double-headers? Does travel time figure in at all? You have to have people on athletic staff whose entire jobs are rules and compliance.

Just one reason why it's so important to take off-season training and conditioning so seriously. And why coaches prefer players with strong work ethics. In other words, they want players who will do what they need to outside of official practice time in order to be fully prepared to play.

For those wondering about what 'counts' : Countable Hours - Athletics Compliance - University of Notre Dame

"A countable athletically related activity is any activity with an athletics purpose involving student-athletes that occurs at the direction of or supervised by one or more institutional coaching staff members"

Basically there is restrictions on coach led, mandatory practices and competition...except that competition = 3 hours... even if it is all weekend and involves travel, hotel stays, multiple game, etc.... 3 hours. How time works is different for the NCAA apparently.

Everything else is 'voluntary'.. or as most student-athletes call it "still mandatory, just the coach isn't there in person".

To clarify, it's 3 hours per day and they're not allowed to do any countable activities after the competition.

Competition Day – All competition & any associated athletically related activities on the day of competition shall count as 3 hours regardless of actual duration. Countable athletically related activities may not be conducted following competition (including during vacation periods) except between consecutive contests (i.e. doubleheaders).
