I've worked on a number of school board bond issues as a campaign advisor. I always tell the boards a couple of things in this area. 1. Don't EVER threaten a cut that you're not willing to make. 2. If you threaten a cut and an issue fails, you HAVE to make the cut to have any credibility on the ballot again. 3. Voters only respond to cuts made not cuts threatened.

I think the Gov didn't get very sound advice.

Politicians when they want to take more of our money always threaten to cut the things the voters love the most (i.e. LSU Football). As was pointed out in this thread, LSU football is a money maker. No doubt this Governor is just threatening this to get more money and not to cut back on all the worthless bureaucracies that most governments tend to be. This happen locally where the school superintendent threatened to go to 4 long days of classes instead of 5, cut out phys ed and breaks during the school day, and in short punish for not wanting to give up more of our hard earned money to support her plans. She lost though and classes are still 5 days, we have phys ed, etc.

the way ESPN Sports explained it was that the State will run out of money pretty quickly, and desperately needs a state tax increase......and that LSU will have to shut down the campus prior to the end of the semester because of it, which would result in "incompletes" for the 16' fall semester student-athletes, resulting in in-eligible players....and thus cancelling the 2016 football season, for all state ran schools, not just LSU.....they also added that Louisiana has notoriously had trouble with voters about increased taxes and most likely a scare tactic.....

Got something similar happening in Illinois. The circus clowns can not agree on a budget. Things are not being paid. They quit paying lottery winners who won over $600. Lottery sales slumped. There was a class action lawsuit filed against the state that would have forced them to suspend lottery sales till the winners got paid. They rushed through an amendment making it legal for the state to pay the lottery winners even though they do not have a budget in place. They are still behind on payments to the schools and colleges putting them in a similar position as the schools in LA.

Not to delve deeply into politics, but a truly brilliant political scientist, Adolph Reed, Jr., born in the Big Easy, said that people in every state tend to think their state government is the WORST.

Just as a side note, his father, Adolph Sr., was a close friend of my parents. I heard some VERY interesting stories about Louisiana politics, esp. Huey Long, which I cannot repeat on a family forum. Adolph Sr. was a great expert on southern politics and race relations, and also told some very interesting stories about interviews with LBJ and Orval Faubus.
