A valid concern from the student's perspective, too. But its relative - many well above average HS students would fall into the "below average student" category at these and other top academic schools! And even those that don't sometimes will feel that way at times! You won't have time for SB if its a constant struggle to keep up academically. While the SB coach may have scholarship money or have some leeway with admissions, YOU should also be working w/ the admissions people to make sure of the academic fit. Just another reason to choose your school carefully without making SB the primary consideration! In other words, from a career perspective, you want to be able to say I graduated from Stanford and played softball rather than I played softball during the one year I was at Stanford!

One thing that really impressed me at the schools where we have done unofficial visits are the academic resources provided to student athletes. I am sure it is designed to help the football and basketball players, but if a student athlete takes advantage of all of the academic resources available to them they have a much better chance of graduating than a regular student!!!

No kidding!! They would have to try harder to flunk out than to pass.

Ive had the coach leaving discussion with colleges before as many times a player commits because of a coach and the relationship with that coach. I have been told the majority of the time the college makes you honor your commitment regardless if the coach is there or not. The coach rarely gets to take their recruits with them in softball.

The problem is when the coach leaves before the NLI is signed. Often the verbal commitment leaves with the coach and the player is SOL looking for a ride in middle of her Senior year.

Okay, at a clinc, then a 16u tournament at a div. 2 college. The college coach, said to us parents at the clinic. We could send him videos of our freshman players and he would be glad to view them, but under NCCA rules, he is not allowed to talk or make any kind of offer or nothing to our dd's. So, I have to ask, if these other coaches are making offers or even speaking with a freshmen, then they are breaking the rules with NCCA, from what this coach told use. So what gives?

So people keep talking about verbals as 2017 or younger player. My dd verbaled to me that she wants to be a Gator, so you can add her to the list of verbals. I hope that, we aren't breaking any NCCA rules by saying that.

Thanks for all of the research! Are these numbers for the incoming freshman class? Do you know if schools are able to accept student athletes who are below these standards? Some schools obviously "bend" the admission standards for athletes of money generating sports, but I was wondering how much "bend" there is in the standards for non-revenue generating sports.

I just went through this with my 2017 dd who was just offered an opportunity to verbal. The coach let us know what the typical accepted student (non athlete) would need and what she would need to get in academically. Since she has a very small HS academic record, they needed to gauge what her grades would look like. What she would need as an athlete was a lot lower than what she would need as a non athlete. Just for ex. if a typical student would need a 1300 math & reading and 3.5 gpa; she would need at least a 1050 math & reading and 3.0 gpa to get in.

Another example is a friend of mines DD was accepted to an Ivy. She got a 2080 on her SAT (all 3). Which was good enough to get in. On the other hand, his son scored 2200 and couldn't even consider that same ivy with better grades as a non athlete.

So yes. apparently there are different standards for athletes. how much, i guess depends on the school.

How it worked for my freshman DD who is about to verbal was the Head coach told her at their clinic to reach out to the assistant via email or phone about a day she could come back for an unofficial visit very soon. My DD emailed the coaches about the day she could make it (just this past Tuesday). They called her travel coach and sent him an itinerary. Our travel coach was the mediator for all information/details until we got on campus and met the coaches. Once we got on campus they could talk freely about anything. After the whole tour, etc, they talked about how much they could offer and grades, etc. and that they were willing to verbally offer her a certain amount if she was going to verbal her desire to play for them.

That's just my experience. They also had a recruiting board in the office with names of 2016s, 2017s and 2018s and the positions they were after. My DD's name was on the top. hehe. not sure if it meant anything more than her name was the first they wrote down but it felt nice when she saw her name there on top.

it looked like they were completely done with 2014/2015s and most of 2016. one was listed for 2016.

I wish her the best of luck, but if a full ride to Stanford, Northwestern or UVA was a potential option, I would have waited!

I realize this is anecdotal but DD has been to many recruiting camps over the last 18 months, where many D-1 schools have participated (including the current #1 team) and every coach said the same thing about someone getting a "full ride" - no one gets a 100% full ride athletic scholarship to play softball. That doesn't mean they don't get a big chunk of the available funds (7 1/2 scholarships a year, I think) but that pot of money is usually spread amongst the 15-20 ladies on the team.

Obviously if you're the next Keilani Ricketts that's probably something entirely different
