Do you think you could post your "Position Checklist"? I have a first year 8U team and we are trying to figure out the skills required for each position. Your checklist sounds like a great idea to avoid the whole "my daughter plays 3rd", even though her throw barely makes it to 2nd!

I too ran the game listed on page 1 (fielders on 1B and 3B hitter with tee). I changed it up a little based on a couple of things. If I were using softballs for this, I would put the tee at the pitching plate and let the batter hit the ball, another player would run the bases, once done running, they became the batter. This helped in two ways, one the players made their "batting order" with the longest hitters vs fastest players. Seemed to work great. And two, typically if batting from home, the players can't hit it that far so they usually will get a double but thats about it.
I also used a golf ball to hit (get an old bat that everyone can use), the ball really flies and both fielders and batter get a lot of running in.

IT'S REC LEAGUE! If you want to keep kids interested in the game, don't just stick them in the outfield. If they all work at it, then they all need a chance in the infield, providing their reaction time isn't an issue.

All the above suggestions are great. Just like what has been stated above...KEEP THEIR ATTENTION. 9/10 year olds lose focus fast. I have four coaches, including myself and during practice, we all run our own station. The stations depend on what our focus is wheter it be hitting or fielding. We break the kids down into groups of three and each station keeps all three kids busy for the duration of that station cycle. We then rotate based on a timer that I set.

After we are done with station training, we play a game that I come up with that takes all the lessons for that practice and puts them together so the kids can feel some immediate accomplishment from what they just learned. Most of all, be creative and allow the kids to have FUN!
