I had planned on timing the whole team last Friday and making it a competition, but we ran late and had a tournament Saturday.

I did time my DD (10) and the HC's DD(9) (two of our faster players, but not The fastest) and I got them both at 4.0. Mine was from the left side and his from the right, straight bunt (no drag). I plan on getting the whole team next week.

Ok. DD had to skip out early, but on our 2000 team, I had a range mostly from low to mid three second range from the left side straight bunt, contact to base. Only two were over 4 and one ran 3.0 twice. I want to see what my DD can do with a drag bunt to be moving. A few wanted to try it swinging from the right side, and it did add around a half second (maybe more). They enjoyed the competition so much we had to make them quit. Now if I can just get some input on what's a good time for a star drill (2-6-3-5-4-2). We timed it some and one of our girls said they had it in the U-Trip WS in Branson skills competition. They liked that too.

I coach Jr High and 14u tb. 60 yard dash (3 heats) is part of the try out and I've had several girls run 3.1 or 3.2 consistently from a standing start. These girls - once taught how to run bases and steal properly - are rarely if ever thrown out on a straight steal to 2nd. Most can take 3rd at will without a pitchout and left handed batter in box. Most of my "avg" kids run around 4. We do a lot of explosion and speed drills in off season and in pre-season practices.

Surely you mean feet. If not, you've got two budding olympic medalists on your team.

You caused me to dig out some old tryout ledgers. Just at a glance the avg. was 4.3 - 4.5. Most of the kids who make team will get down to 4. 3.1 has been my fastest kid (2 of them right now and probably 5 total in 8 years of coaching at this level). I admire speed and have taken a couple of girls who have no softball skills just because of it. One worked out and is an excellent player today - the other never made a ball player or base runner.

Any chance you would share those drills? I've had a hard time finding explosion/speed drills.

thanks.

The point of the timed run to first is to measure explosiveness out of the box and to see that they don't quit running till they touch the base. We also time girls from home to home. I will say that the girls with the fastest times to first also tend to have the fastest home to home times.

Thank you. I'm trying to get a feel for where my dd is. She's just starting 7th grade now, and playing travel ball (we don't have Jr High ball here in Missouri). She is fairly quick, and wanting to improve as much as possible. Planning on doing track this spring, anything to improve her sprinting. I wish I could find a site that had stats based on age range, somewhere..
