Should I be expected to run base to base so my team doesn't run up to score

I don't think a Player should stop on a double. Do run the Plays out.

however I would stop running on passed balls and overthrows. also stop working the Count against a struggling pitcher. Don't swing at pitches in the dirt (because that creates bad Habits) but swing at the first strike you get (even if it is an Inch off the plate) even when it is 3-0 - think about practicing two strike hitting. if you get thrown 4 pitches over your head take the walk though. if you don't run on passed balls and try to Limit your own walks that should be enough opportunity for the Opponent to end innings.

Like several have said you can be nice or insulting depending on how the other coach takes it. Younger age and older in blowouts I take base to to base if there could be any type of play, no stretching into the nxt. Stand up dbl is a stand up dbl. Other wise I try to keep them force outs available as that is what I would want I on D. I've been on both sides. One of the LLWS boys the Japanese team was way up on another international team and kept pushing. I remember the commentators saying that was their culture and expected the other team to get them out. So goes to show many ways of looking at it.

Back at the younger ages I have been in situations with no run rule per inning where the opposing team just could not get an out. So as not to be insulting I would first ask the opposing coach how he would like me to handle (i.e. have a girl leave early or just keep on going). More often than not the opposing coach would take any help he could get. I have even had girls strike out on purpose in some brutally long innings - I tell them it won't count in the book...

Of course, this is league play. Running the score up beyond 10 runs is just terrible. If you want to actually challenge your kids, play in a weekend tournament an age division up and see how that goes. If its a rec league, try a TB tourney. Seriously, a little humbling experience will show you that playing with class is the right thing. Period. No one gets a thing out of a blow out.

I have been on both sides of it. I know how it feels when a team is up by ten runs (at 10U level) and still delay steals home. Not good for anyone!

I think the rule of thumb for Rec ball is no stealing bases, no advancing on a passed ball, things like that. Don't take a legit hit away from a kid but in the same respect don't take that extra base when the OF holds the ball (we use the rule if we a crushing a team on a ball hit to OF once OF starts to throw ball in we stop running). Lucky for me our girls understand it and why we do it.

We also like to mix it up a bit, let girls try new positions. Our last game of the regular season (12u) this past fall we already secured the No.1 seed for playoffs and were facing a team that didn't have a win. We had my 1st baseman playing SS, my catcher in CF things like that.

i don't want to sound to harsh but is your argument really about keeping your runners in shape?

I know this is an old thread, but I just saw it.
In Rec ball or LL, it is often difficult to take your foot off the gas without the car going into a ditch.

It can be tricky...I agree about not running up the score and moving players around, but I have been "accused" of running up the score in two separate non-TB games. in one, I lost track of the score and was encouraging aggressive baserunning. In the other, a first game of a double header make-up on a hot day, I wanted to run-rule the other team as quickly as possible. I exceeded the run-rule number by a lot because in this case I lost track of the innings.

I don't like holding batter-runners at 1B unless everyone is hitting bombs. If I was in the field and they weren't running out their hits, I would see that as condescending. worse than just getting beaten. I will keep my runners from stealing, and taking only one base at a time when on base, but otherwise I try to keep it as real as possible having batters run out their hits and having baserunners take leads as opposed to standing like a statue on the bag.

I'd probably back off a bit in a situation where the outcome is no longer in doubt. Having said that, if I'm in the other dugout I never get mad at another team "running up the score" - if you don't like it, stop them.

So I'd probably agree with the AC's philosophy in this case but having said that, I'd expect my AC to follow my instructions.
