Going to put together a baseline for my new team and wondering what you think are the most important measurable things? I have access to a radar gun and a stopwatch, so go nuts!

I wouldn't get too caught up in metrics, unless these are older girls and there are very specific goals they want to achieve to further their careers.

The most important measurable is how many players from your team will return next season :D

MPH for pitchers is a very obvious one, and an illustrative one to use as an example. Just ended our season a while back at 120 team "World Series" 14A tournament. Plus velocity pitchers, 55+, who only had velocity would still get hit. It's not like MLB where they would get bombed, but hitters are good enough to put the ball in play, the better ones still can get some hard hits. The few I saw 60+ same thing, although the speed is enough to be pretty effective.

If I were to come up with "measurables" for the most effective pitchers we saw I would say:

 1. Can hit locations fairly consistently, at this age maybe most importantly being able to go inside.
 2. Have a good change-up, and yeah if you have some decent velocity a good change-up's effectiveness gets multiplied
 3. Pure velocity
 4. It's fun when a curve breaks off the plate for a strikeout but at this age was still not a bread and butter type of pitch

It is an older team and am trying to benchmark for some offseason goals. Not just pitching, but hitting, overhand throw, base running, etc.

I stress to my 16U summer team girls (which vary in age from 12-16) my "Rule of 4". Offensively, it should take you less than 4 seconds to beat out an infield single to 1B, and defensively we want to make all our plays in under 4 seconds. The more we stress(ed) that in practices, the more accurate our throws became to 1B (or anywhere else), and offensively it still needs work. My girls tended to struggle out of the box and never recovered down the bases, and then complained they should've been safe. Teenagers. -_-

I'm wondering (for example) what is an acceptable team batting average ? Or what is an acceptable amount of errors per game ? Obviously the higher the batting avg the better and the fewer errors the better but where do those numbers become unacceptable ? For a high school team that is.

That depends entirely on the run environment in which your team plays.

Outs are currency, and it's bad to make them (on offense). How bad is determined by the run environment of the league/conference/all competition. But I wouldn't bother trying to figure out an acceptable batting average. What matters is how often they're getting on base (OBP) and what kind of hits they're getting when they get hits (SLG).

Figuring out acceptable numbers might be impossible since you probably don't have access to stats from all the teams you play (and, ideally, all the teams they play). But if you can get some season-long stats from some teams, including yours, you might be able to figure out some average numbers that could help you.

In my area, a typical, solid high school starter bats has BA about .350, OBP about .400. %K less than 15.0 and EBH about 10% of PA. This type of player would be an everyday starter (assuming decent defense and available spot) but not an All Conference type player. As for errors, it depends on the criteria of the scorer and the players position. I use a standard of reaches, hard hits are not errors but bad throws and within the body boots are errors. This standard results in an average of about 2-3 team errors per game.

I like speed. I like home to first time as a metric. I think 3.3 is a good time and I would like everyone but pitchers to run sub 3.3 seconds. I think sub 3.0 is fast and want my outfielders close to that unless they have a huge stick and I can't play them elsewhere. If a girl is in the 2.8 range she is FAST and I want her on my team. I will teach her to slap!

On Deck runs camps where they do very detailed measurements. Below is a link to see the tests they do -- might give you some ideas. I have some results from the tests that were posted on another board, I don't feel right about posting those here but if you were to hunt around you might find some lol
