DD played basketball and volleyball up until she started HS. May have played volleyball in HS, but volleyball and softball are both Fall sports in GA. It also depends on what level of TB your DD is playing. The higher the level of TB the deeper the commitment.

Anecdotal I know...Former teammate of DD decided to run cross country...severe shin splints and micro-fractures led to months on crutches...doesn't play anything anymore.

Both my DDs ran cross country in HS. Both are softball fast and one is really fast. I don't think the 5K distance is so long that it hurts their speed although they need to keep doing g some speed work. Both did develop some leg injuries. Two years ago the youngest had a stress fracture but we figured it was from trying to play fall ball on top of cross.country. The CC coach scheduled in rest days on the weekends and DD played softball tourneys. Doc thought it was overuse. She played minimal fall softball last season and had no issues. The mental.toughness that the girls develop is impressive. 5K is a nice gut check.

Shin splints generally develop by running too much too quickly when you are not in shape for it. Very common. It is tough for the summer softball players to be in CC shape when the CC season starts if they are playing nationals into August and then start into tryouts and fall ball. The girls need to run all summer.

Her #1 things is playing college softball and she only wants to do things to help improve softball

If she is an athlete, she needs to explore other sports. There is a lot more out there than softball.

Totally agree here. Other sports give my DD a break and keep her from burning out on anything. She also plays volleyball and basketball which relate well to softball movements since both require quickness and bursts of speed. Her plan is to quit basketball after this season because once she enters high school next year it overlaps with softball. The HS basketball coach used to coach the MS and he has other ideas. His plan is for her to play but he will let her do her preseason throwing and conditioning with the softball team so she doesn't miss anything.

It doesn't even have to be another sport. Do something different. Try being in a play, or learn an instrument. Take a foreign language.
